Hi all not sure of where to ask this but if anyone has flown from Australia to Japan in the last month or so could tell me about the visitjapan requirement? I was told to register by Qantas onthe visitjapan site but when I do it only tells me I don't need to wear a mask or have proof of vaccination. So what happens when we get to Haneda on Friday? Do I only need my passport? Thanks Kate
I went there a few months ago and flying in was much easier with the visit japan thing. You don't need to do the Covid stuff anymore (if it's still on there) but you can fill in the rest and scan the qr codes when asked.
You need this page www.vjw.digital.go.jp and make an account if you have not done already.
You still have to do the immigration and customs part of the Visit Japan form, just not the health/Covid part. If you don't show your barcode at check-in, you'll be sent aside to complete it then at the airport, so you really should just do it in advance.
You don't have to do the Visit Japan online thing, it just makes things faster upon arrival (you can do the customs check while waiting for bags and go out an e gate instead of having to see an agent). I had no push back at check in at CPH for not (yet) having updated the Visit Japan account for the new arrival.
The old arrivals form is still around, JAL offered it last week on JL36 from SIN and people in the arrivals hall were checking if people had filled in the form, or had the QR code ready.
QF is likely pushing people to use the online form so they no longer have to carry the paper forms.
It is a replacement for the paper form. Some airlines no longer carry them, so if you don't use the digital form, you'll have to find one and fill it in on the ground before going through arrival procedures.
You'll have to make an account (email address) for the digital form and update it for each arrival.
There seems to be fewer questions at immigration and customs when you use the digital form. Likely since it gives them up to 3 days before arrival to vet the passengers.
The site makes 2 different QR codes, one for immigration and one for customs. You can screen cap them so you don't need to access data roaming/connect to airport wifi.
I am arriving in HND later this week and have already set up my QR code.
However I am finding the information on the detailed Arrival process somewhat sparse. The attached graphic does not help much (where are the mentioned e-gates?).
Can any who arrived in Japan recently list the process after disembarking the aircraft?

2. Immi will do the usual passport process and ask you if you have a QR code. You will be required to scan the QR code on a reader at the Immi desk.
3. Collect bags (if applicable).
4. In contrast to the diagram above, a Quarantine desk was off to the side of the baggage carousels. Signs directed you there if you had certain items (the usuals: fruit, rice etc). There were also Quarantine staff walking the baggage claim with pictorial signage.
4. Proceed to customs where you’ll likely be intercepted by people asking if you have the QR code, or paper form. These people will direct you down a specific lane. If not intercepted, pay close attention to signage to go down the correct lane.
In our case, I suspect we were profiled as we were directed away from the main Customs exit to one of those big stainless steel benches and it seemed a full bag check was looming. However the agent scanned the QR code, inspected passports and we were on our way.
In some other lanes there was no further scan of QR code or passport. Some had bags go through x-ray.
The queue of people with paper forms seemed to be slower than QR codes.

Land at gate (hope its close - if you see 140+ be prepared for a long walk).
At the end of the walk, you'll see some things setup for health screening (relic of the covid years). Walk past those and you should be at immigration control. Foreign tourist passports are to the right side.
If its busy, they'll use the barriers and funnel you to a machine that will scan your passport and get your fingerprint before rejoining the main immigration line.
This is point 1 where you use your VisitJapanWeb QR code.
Immigration officer will print you your visa sticker with a QR code on it (use this for tax free shipping in the city). This is also where you use your VisitJapanWeb QR code.
You're now at baggage collection on the other side. If you're out before your bags, you can find one of the self serve kiosks for customs. You just need to scan your passport and use the QR code again from VJW and confirm.
Exit customs once you have your bags and did the self serve kiosk. Note if you did the QR code for each individual travellers separately everyone will need to do that customs thing separately i believe and walk 1 by 1 through the final exit area.
Hopefully you see the Welcome to Japan sign at this point and navigate your way to downtown Tokyo. Dead straight ahead will be the monorail/Keikyu line / bus limousine /Taxis area.
