Amongst the 700K+ points JASAs on offer, SYD-HKG, 1 Feb 2012, is an 86K option. Only a few available, so may not last long.
Have snatched it up - so hope I am not missing something pertinent that makes it "not too good to be true"!

I hope so too! I got one for May HKG-MEL-BNE JASA for 65,000 points. Only booked two weeks ago!

Hmmm... I just spent 20 minutes trying to find any JASA from now until May. the minium points required fo MEL/HGK/MEL seems to be 144,000 points.

Yes. I have been monitoring the MEL-HKG JASAs for several days but had no luck with anything reasonably priced for the fairly tight period in which I could travel. Many of the offerings were 500k+ for one way.

Decided to try a different approach and combine with a Sydney commitment - and had a lucky find of one jewel amongst the 700k dross!

Good luck with your search.

Have you looked at travelling via PER or SYD?
When I was searching, there was a good First option, via Perth - but one day outside my travel dates, alas.
May be worth checking that route again, even with your family group requirement. (That is, if you think it prudent to expose your kids to F at this stage in their travelling lives! Expectations, and all that....)

Indicates that a classic award (U) seat is available on those days. When those are available, the Any Seat price is the same (assuming you choose to pay the ++ using your own money rather than points)

If you are looking for a return flight, then 144,000 will be the cheapest you will ever find for a JASA for that route (you can reduce it to 120,000 if you pay the ++ yourself)

There is no First option MEL-HKG via PER (at least not as an ASA) - QANTAS doesn't offer First on MEL-PER or PER-HKG. You might to look closely at the cabins offerings for each leg of that flight.

Hello Anonymous Coward.
And mea culpa. I must have mis-remembered the Perth flight details. Certainly, there is a F Saver option for a direct MEL_HKG in Jan, for something around 117K.
Haven't looked any further.

No doubt I am being really thick. But that doesn't seem to reflect what I have found while searching, so I assume that I am overlooking some key point or misinterpreting your "assuming...." above.

Often, for a particular date, there was a Classic Award available, but the JASA for the same date/flight could be markedly more expensive, no matter how you measured it.

Any further enlightenment from your experience for someone coming only recently to this ASA game?

Oh wow. this is truely annoying. why couldn't you have started this thread 6 months ago when i was booking tickets to fly to TPE in a few days!

120,000pts + ~$550 for JASA SYD-HKG is soooooo cheap!
SYD-TPE JASA cheapest is 120,000+$2700 (flying BR)

could have bought the SYD-HKG JASA and then a return J ticket on CX for $1100 HKG -TPE for almost $1000 cheaper!

suxxors.

must be all snapped up. I can't find anything under 500k.

i just searched. There's still a few. they're available for different inbound and outbound dates.

does it have anything to do with your qf tier?

I don't think so. But it is certainly dependent on dates. It also seems that the ~86K flights are available only on Wednesdays or Thursdays.

Two things to note:
a) Classic priced award seats may be available on partner airlines (e.g. CX or BA). If there's a Classic seat available on those airlines, this has no effect on ASA redemptions, as cheap ASA redemptions are never available on partner airlines - only QF. So, the Classic award seat needs to be available on QANTAS.
b) WPs get access to extra Classic award availability (in Y, and maybe other classes). These do not help with finding a cheap ASA seat.

The best bet is to use KVS or ExpertFlyer (or similar) and see if there's P (First), U (Business), Z (PE) or X (Economy) availabilty on a QF flight showing via one of those tools. If so, then you can book the ASA at the Classic award price. There's a whole thread available on this topic here: http://www.australianfrequentflyer....uent-flyer-program/how-do-i-book-j-29610.html

Note: if you are able to find a cheap JASA redemption, but no classic award availability on a particular flight (or vv.) then please do update us with the details so we can look into it.

Looking at LHR-PER JASA's and some results like LHR-SIN-SYD-MEL-PER for 110K + 1,000 Oh My Gosh British Pounds where J is not available on LHR-SIN-SYD and you get to fly First  [trying to get back to OZ in March]. Too bad the 1,000 OMGBP is the killer! Also been looking at ex-SIN and ex-BKK to ADL. For eg. SIN-xSYD-ADL for 50K + 400SGD (~$300AUD) and ex-BKK to ADL, BKK-SYD-MEL-ADL where BKK-SYD is in F ..... 60K and 15,000BHT (~$500AUD) These are some good deals going if one is shopping around ;)

I don't normally book any seat awards but always on the look out for specials.

Isn't SYD-HKG in business class usually 60,000 QFF points? Just trying to work out how 86,000 QFF points is special or is it usually hard to find any seat awards for 60,000 QFF points?

The options posted by Alanslegal above at 60,000 QFF points sound very enticing.

The JASA starts off being 86k in points but you can reduce your points spend with real $'s down to 60k
