LOL, good service but one wonders why it took them so long to ask!

Since that Perth trip I know of two disgruntled Qantas frequent flyers – one a Platinum One, the other a Platinum – who, frustrated for different reasons, made contact directly with Borghetti explaining their irritation at the Qantas offering. They asked what Virgin could do for them. In both cases, Borghetti responded promptly, politely and powerfully from his iPad, welcoming them on board at Platinum level. His sales staff followed up on the phone within hours and loyalty from two high-paying customers was locked in. That’s what I call service, and that’s what these people want.

Must admit I am puzzled by the thought that the Author thinks MEL AKL in the EK a380 could mean your shower will be over PMQ???

He does. I had op to meet him in BNE lounge and on flight to SYD. Saw him at pointy end and back, chatting with crew. Good communication skills.

I don't care if the author never comes back to PER. She can't have traveled too far from the airport if that's the conclusion she drew.

And I'm not sure that JB would do a status match immediately without some effort being made to first check the bona fides of the two involved. If he didn't, he's left himself open to a few thousand similar requests,

I wouldn't take offence - the reporter is a bit of a flake her articles are usually fluffy and puff with little substance, this one is no exception.

Having lived in Perth recently I have to say the author of the article is quite correct on that front, in my humble opinion.

You are welcome to feel similarly about Sydney if you like :-)

Alas a year is a very short time in the life of the stock market. Qantas shares climbed 22% after AJ's first year as CEO. Essentially though, they are trading stocks.

It's a long time in Aviation though, and when all the indicators point up (fleet growth, decreasing fleet age, RPKs, ASKs) that year goes quickly.

You might also want to check your facts, I am having trouble seeing a 25% climb from Nov 2008 when the shares were $2.70 on commencement, given they were at $2.70 in Nov 2009, hitting a top of $3 a month later. So a year after he was appointed CEO they were at the same price, peaked at $3 a month later and have never seen that level since??? Four years of Red Qs (herrings) and the market cap has only grown once to be ten percent more than when AJ started, with the share price now less than half what it was when he started and almost a 1/4 of it's level 5 years ago!

The next time I fly VA and they lose my bags I'm going to call JB.......he seems to be able to fix everything;)

I do not know which Perth you live in, but the author of the article was spot on with the Perth I live in. As I work in the mining industry and over 400 of my colleagues have just been retrenched over the last two weeks, I can tell you that morale is not high on the Terrace.

Don't totally agree with your first assertion but that's a whole lengthy discussion. Anyway QAN.AX was $2.32 the day Alan Joyce became CEO and climbed to over $3 elev months later. Thats actually better than 30% for a good trade. Thems the facts. The stock then traded in that $2.50 - $3.10 range for another year. You shouldn't trust those terrible charts on the ASX website.

Not questioning the rest of your commentry in fact it demonstrates my point. Virgin shares have suffered the same 5 year decline as Qantas. $1.95 to $0.43 Let's see where Virgin is in 3 years time.

Note to self, don't rely on ASX data, thanks for the correction. it will be interesting to see where all the different airlines are in three years time, including the Split QF entity's.

Let's not be too smug. JB has a long long way to go in proving himself as a CEO in a very tough industry.

BTW, you may find this chart interesting. VIRGIN AUS FPO Share Price Chart | VAH.AX - Yahoo!7 Finance

Agreed, I can't understand the hype JB gets everywhere, including this forum. His business model so far has revolved entirely around emulating and undercutting QFF and QF Domestic, and finding partners for the international arm while maintaining a grand total of two long-haul destinations. Totally different kettle of fish to what AJ has to deal with.

Let's not forget that they're not immune to mistakes (remember MEL-JNB?) and they post profits rather sporadically.

Your underplaying what AJ got left with and JBs role, specifically a healthy domestic QF and QFF business built up by JB in the first place. While VA may have only got two international destinations, they have moved to being the number three international carrier in Australia by passenger numbers while carrying more passengers than QF mainline domestically, with rising ASKs and RPKs. All the silly international destinations were thrown out by JB, including JNB, and I would not call consistent profits sporadic in the domestic context. QF achieved its highest ever profit with JB as GM, hope to see DJ do the same.

I think VBA's % of international passengers carried had ranked 3/4 for about 4 years, but it was only when Pacific blue & V Australia were merged to VAIH that BITRE combined the figures.

By VBA I mean All virgin blue group majority owned airlines.

I don't doubt his contribution to QF while he was there, but he was there at a time when there was virtually no competition in domestic and before the GFC hurt international travel everywhere. A very different airline industry back then. His response while at VA to the increased pressure was to cut unprofitable routes, reroute to partner hubs, while holding off on ordering any more widebodies - AJ gets widespread hate for attempting to do the same.

JB clearly knows the boundaries of what an Australian-based airline can profitably run internationally, but those boundaries are obviously not enough for what the Australian government and public expect of QF. He won't be able to apply the same strategies that made VA/DJ successful, to QF today without the kind of backlash that we're seeing right now.

One difference between the two that is quite obvious is that JB is charismatic while AJ is about as likeable as stale bread :D

But anyway, competition can only mean good things for everyone. The next 5-10 years will be very interesting for Australian aviation.
