jb747's last operational flight

I'm pretty sure you mean 30 feet, not FL300. That would be one long runway needed...
It was a joke, to exaggerate the size of the aircraft and where its flight deck is situated...

The difference between the height of the 747 and 380 was quite noticeable on the conversion.

As was the difference between the 767 and 747... which was my excuse for really planting one.

The LSL payout should also be a good one

At various times through my career, I've used LSL. Mostly by choice, but sometimes assigned. I think they owe me about 160 days of leave in total, with an even split between LSL and normal leave. They go to some lengths to stop people keeping large amounts of leave, but at times things come up that cause you to lose already allocated leave slots.

Would love to see a photo of yourself during your Navy Days jb747.
Well done and all the best.

Same with us. They claim it's bad book keeping, having liabilities such as excess leave. I think that it's in our EB that excess leave that's not taken gets paid out at our marginal rates. So, you lose half of it, effectively, in tax.

Same situation at my employer, although leave slots are effectively built in so we have prescribed times it must be taken (which basically works out to once you've earned 4 weeks, you go on A/L for 4 weeks). You can build a couple extra weeks if its mutually acceptable and you have a workable plan to take a longer period off, but otherwise little exception.

I love how this thread has now turned into "Ask the Pilot" 2.0!
Congrats on a stellar career JB.

JB, any thoughts now it is 'all over', you might want to work part time at the simulator facility. Your skill set is current and your practical knowledge would be very useful.

If I’d wanted to continue working, I could have flown the 380 for another 18 months. The absolute last thing I’d want is to end up in the sim, working twice as many days, for 25% of the money.

Maybe when things settle down in your life now, and before you and Mrs JB go off camping, you might find time to give us a rundown on your last operational flights, any notable things of interest, and further pics.

On your last day when you finished up, were there any celebrations, other than the ones in the aircraft on the last flight? I suppose though, most of your working life is in the air with aircrew, as distinct from associating with office admin people. To them, you are just another pilot retiring? Do management give out gold watches or gold passes etc as a long time, very valuable employee conveying many thousands of people lives safely and not bending an extremely valuable asset? Or..simply Bye...

When camping, I hope you log in now and again to the, Ask the pilot thread.

It will all have to wait until I get back from NZ in a couple of weeks.

I expect that I’ll have internet access most of the time in our travels around Australia.

They did give me a nice crystal memento, though having it engraved with a 787 is a bit suss (it’s a standard item, no matter what you flew). As for a gold pass, you very funny man. They actually dramatically reduced my staff travel priority, as I’m now retired staff. As for being a valuable employee...you’re extra funny.

Perhaps one of the mods will move them at some point.
Done :). Will try to keep this thread to JB's last flight and retirement discussion. The LH captain's retirement flight is interesting and worthy of discussion ... in the Ask the Pilot thread.
