Umm shouldnt we change the title to reduced fares for no CHECKED Luggage rather than no CARRY ON?

BUDGET airline Jetstar has launched discounted airfares for customers who choose to travel with carry-on baggage only on its domestic and international services.

The JetSaver Light fare cuts $10 off the price of domestic one-way tickets and $20 off one-way international travel for customers travelling with carry-on baggage up to 10 kilograms.

I half like his idea and am half concerned - if people are willing to spend to hours on line to get a $20 fare to OOL then they are going to push this to the limit - causing quite a lot of strife at check in...

One does wonder if it is the first attempt to introduce a 'user-pays' style baggage charge across the group

Dont be surprised to see Scales and a baggage test unit at each departure
Either way for a short day return or 1-2 night trip this puts a lot of pressure on other carriers from a purely price perspective. I did notice there is no mention of JetFlex fares also reducing.
Again choice to the consumer is good.Suspect we need keep an eye on the leadin prices on markets to make sure they dont drop the Jetsaver fares by $10 but have much less availablility of entry pricing

I do like this idea - not sure it would make much difference to me - $10 saving on a $11,000+ fare is not great ;)

I do think however that in a low cost model where speed at check in etc. is critical trhis might put an increased burden at check in that will slow thiungs down. There will be TT/ACA examples of people missing out on their holiday to coughet because they were 500gr over the weight limit...

Including QF? I don't think so....

Fantastic idea... now do I get a refund on all the fares I have already purchased? LOL

BUT, staying real… all that Jetstar has spun today, is that its lowest / lead-in fare prices will no longer included checked baggage! This will better place them, to compete on price perception, with Tiger.

I am a complete fan of de-bundling airfares, although I recognised that makes me part of the minority on AFF. I prefer picking & paying extra for the things I actually want from an airline rather than having to pay a ticket price, which is full of “inclusions” that I don’t require.

In terms of luggage, 10kg is spot on for me, because I can’t seem to get my wheelie-bin in under 8kg, and the extra 2kg will cover my personal item (note: no personal item allowed on Tiger, but it is on Jetstar).

I would imagine all eyes are focussed on Jetstar, now maintaining their stated $10 ticket reduction. For example, a route with a non-sale lead in price of $79, should become $69! (Competing against TT @ $59.95 +$5cc*). And $59 moves to $49! (Competing against TT @ $39.95 +$5cc*) (* Jetstar has payment options other than credit card.)

Internationally, 'tis $20 per segment - conceivably that could amount up to $400 on an xONEx)

I'm sure one can find room on one's person for 500 grams of weight.

Remember, clothing being worn and item carried in clothing being worn "have no weight"! :p

That's the problem though - people rock up at checkin and fin dthey are slightly over, they then shave some grams off their bags and put in their pocket, at security they now have to take off their bulky coats, excess items and put through the xray whilst dropping keys, phones, clothes, picking the items up again all the while I am stood behind them with liquids in hand and laptop ready to go through th scanner and all other metal items neatly stored in bags - and uncle Jimmy's nail clippers that have been handed down through the generations are tucked away at home.

The way JQ is perceived at the moment this is just another opportunity for them to be seen to be doing the wrong thing and get on ACA/TT.

Related: Tiger swipes back in fare war.

... The budget airfare war has again heated up with Tiger Airways announcing its own sale in the wake of Jetstar's one-cent seats.

...

Tiger Airways responded by releasing 100,000 fares for $9.95 including taxes and surcharges. The Tiger fares will be available on all its routes departing from Melbourne for travel between February and October this year.

Tiger's fares go on sale tonight from 6pm. ...

The $10 Tiger fares are not available on all routes from Melbourne. How disappointing.

Care to elaborate? Did the fares sell out or not get offered?

I think MEL-PER was the only fare not on sale at $10.

There definetly was a sale on for the rest of the routes, excellent availability for some too. I booked a MEL-CBR-MEL for their first flights to the capital on Thursday at 10 bucks each.

Interesting/disappointing side note. TT were charging a $5 credit card surcharge, which I think is up on recent times. Other extras (like seat selection) seem to have risen too.

Correct - even MEL-DRW was on sale for $10, which is a longer flight.

All of which suggests PER is the only market they have reasonable forward bookings...Id suggest Tiger may be finding it a bit harder than they thought

In my small experience of Tiger flights so far, I have not encountered an empty flight, in fact cabins have appeared 70% full or better.

May I suggest, that including Darwin in the specials (while Perth wasn't ) was more to do with keeping the deal real!
  • If it is $199.95 MEL-SIN
  • and $189.95 DRW-SIN
  • then charging MEL-DRW @ $9.95 seems quite a responsible thing to do!
Also, may I point out, the Tiger website -
  • coped with the traffic, (I only had to hit refresh a few times)
  • had broad ranging availability,
  • did not employ blackout or yield management trickery, based on fancy computer traffic predictions, just low fares on future days I might want to fly!
Tiger is successfully generating exposure in Melbourne, as the airline with the Real Deal, leaving Jetstar, in particular, cowering behind its smoke and mirror promotions. (Aside from the fact that "proud to call Melbourne home" is plastered across all Tiger's L1 doors.)

One other interesting point I want to make, is observing passengers seated at the back of the aircraft during disembarkation in Melbourne. Generally, they all get up and face forward, not expecting rear exit stairs... this means that if they have experienced interstate jet travel previously this century, it has probably been with Qantas (and NOT Virgin Blue nor Jetstar)!

Isnt it more likely that they had not experienced jet travel rather than were all ex-QFers?

I have to say hats off to TT - they seemed to make that sale work - simple and not too gimmicky - a bit of a result for them.

Interestingly, no... If they had no experience, there would be no preconception about how to exit an aircraft! (Other than how they got on.)

(Of course, my original comments relate to interstate jet travel, the experience could come from other sources. I tested this on my last flight, @ row 23, by standing up and facing backwards, as I knew that's how I would exit, but no one took my lead and turned around! If you have flown Virgin Blue, or to a lesser extent Jetstar*, those airlines' frequent flyers behaviour is different when it comes to offloading from the rear. *Jetstar changed its rear exit policy, at major airports, quite a while ago - to front only.)

Umm most people would take that as a pretty big hint as to which way to get off - most people get out of the car out the same door they got in...
