Jetstar cuts carry-on baggage allowance [from 10kg to 7kg]

You can thank those who have abused the process and pushed the envelope.
How Many times have I boarded a J* flight , complied with the restrictions, only to see other greedy/ selfish pax with more carry on luggage than I have in the hold !? Good move I say .

Agree there are people who push the carry on limit, though I see this all the time on QF and VA mostly by business types.

Not a reason to decrease limit to 7kg, just police the 10kg limit solved, or make the 7kg limit the main bag, that way people can still have their laptop or 2 bottles of wine.

Even if there's no bloodshed, there will certainly be tears before bedtime. ;)

I can hear all the screaming now, about how they "ruined my holiday!"

Suggestion: wear a coat and/or pants with big pockets.

Yes will have to bring along my winter coat for my trip to Bali 

Photographers vest has lots of handy pockets, doesn't over heat you and generally doesn't create attention. One SQ flight they were weighing luggage and this is how hubby got all his cough.... umm, very important camera stuff on board.

Re: Change to J carry on, max 7kg per bag

I don't understand why this is so hard. People stop bringing the kitchen sink onboard and just conform to the very simple rules, what is difficult about that ? If you have more or bigger than allowed, check it in, end of story.

There's nothing hard about it. Airlines should scrap the weight limit and strictly enforce the size and piece limits.

Except compartments do have weight limits, so there does need to be some restrictions on weight.

But 100% agree that size is the main problem.

Dammit, will have to leave the good thongs and singlets at home now

Re: Change to J carry on, max 7kg per bag

Mrs Ansett and I have a booking for Cairns at Easter on Deathstar with HLO and will be carrying 10 kilo each and a copy of the confirmation of the ticket indicating the 10 kilo allowance. Lets hope they don't get silly :)

They do have weight limits, but they are considerable. BA and other airlines allow unlimited weight, so it can't be anywhere near a safety issue (there's only so much you can pack into a standard sized rolla-board unless you're packing brinks... or books maybe!)

Jetstar get silly ? Would that ever happen ?

Have a look at some of the limits, particularly on the 767. They aren't always high, and vary throughout the aircraft, and between aircraft in the same fleet.

Figures I have for the 767 (British Airways) are (for various bins): 15kgs, 19 kgs 24 kgs 26 kgs 27 kgs 36 kgs and 39 kgs

Given each bin might have to accommodate 1 or 2 bags, that seems fairly generous, and I would expect 'max weight' to be the absolute lowest limit of what the bins could actually withstand.

My rolla-bag (with lap-top and change of clothes) comes in about 13-15kgs. I think that's a fair and reasonable weight. You can hardly pack anything for 7kg.

But what if they can physically fit 3-4 bags (most would)? Then there is a weight problem.

I'm assuming some of the lower weight limits are associated with the smallest bins (like the single bins you'll see to fill space at the beginning or end of a cabin) - some of those are very narrow - not even capable of accommodating a roller-bag.

See post #10.

Also, not in the USA, where it seems that there is no limit. ;)

How the heck?? I had 10kg of checked baggage for my last trip which was a medium suitcase stuffed to the brim with clothes, souvenirs, dive gear, duty free .... I don't even know how I'd manage to get 10kg in a carry on size.

Re: Change to J carry on, max 7kg per bag

Makes sense to keep it in line with other airlines in Australia, though would it have been too much to ask that the limits on QF and VA increased, instead of this? :p

Re: Change to J carry on, max 7kg per bag

I too would have preferred that QF increase to 10kg for carry on. I can travel with one bag (7kg) but I would prefer the 10kg limit.

There was some talk about a questionnaire from QF asking about carry on only fares, I would be all for it especially if there was a 10 kg limit.

How do you know, six months in advance, that you'll be carrying 10kg in hand luggage? Or are you going to make sure you are, in an effort to prove a point?

I'd reckon many frequent flyers would have a pretty good idea of the weight of their hand luggage? I pretty much carry the same things each time, and the weight is pretty consistent.

if I knew there was a strict 10kg limit, for me it would be a case or removing items to reach that 10kgs, rather than adding items to my bag to make it up to 10kg.

No John Have no Idea how much we will end up have just done MEL-LHR with less than 10Kg Carry on and to be honest not sure what the point of your post is????

My point is we booked with the expectation that we would be able to take on 10Kg of carry on. My concern is that this may have been dropped to 7 Kg which could be a pain. I had not seen the post where it notated that bookings prior to XYZ date would not be affected.

Again what is the point of your post?
