Jetstar Delays/Cancellations

For the fourth consecutive afternoon, B744 VH-OEB is operating for JQ as QF6403/QF6404 SYD - HNL and return. That makes seven trips in eight days or nights each way. Perhaps they ought rechristen the aircraft 'Waikiki' or similar.

This is due to JQ's B788 VH-VKJ remaining stabled at KIX following the 29 March engine problems on approach that the safety authorities are investigating.

It must be a while since JQ's had a larger aircraft inoperable on an unscheduled basis for so long.

Is there any word as to when this B788 will be "fixed"/released from "custody?"
 
Speaking of the QF charters SYD to HNL, JQ B788 VH-VKJ remains marooned at KIX. This makes at least 15 consecutive days inoperable.'

There's perhaps been a longer period when a twin aisle JQ bird has been unexpectedly out of service but I can't remember a recent occurrence exceeding the travails of VKJ.

Very costly to have to replace repeated return flights up to HNL.

May or may not be. We don't know how much QF is charging, and this owuld be off-set by ticket sales for the original JQ flight anyway. Plus the airline might be insured for the 787 event... either through its insurers or through a claim against the engine manufacturer.
 
That's a difference between a charter and accommodating on QF services? Facebook seems to suggest JQ won't transfer tickets :(
No difference to me. The airline can charter a few seats or an entire aircraft.
I have been put on other airline’s seats on 2 occasions. My original ticket still kosher and all that was required was a new boarding pass - the agreement between original and rescue airline invisible to me.

I guess the difference would be a fixed price vs whatever price the other airline wanted to charge for individual seats? If the MEL-SIN service is cancelled it might be cost effective to charter a plane, but not to accommodate individuals on different airlines.
 
Looks like the cancelled flight on Friday 19 April is the JQ37 SYD-DPS.

No alternatives organised for anyone... flights not offered until days later. Pax out of pocket hundreds of dollars to fly GA.

This is where we really need an EU261 to help cover the costs of replacement flights.

I think there is industry agreement or at least some bilateral agreement between airline pairs about the cost of carriage for the other airline's passengers which Ive heard is less than a fully flexible fare that a passenger might see. Someone might have more accurate information. But yes the totality of the cost may mean that a charter is more economical.

Perhaps QF had only one 747 available to run a last minute charter, and it also suited them on several levels of analysis including that QF did not want this to result in an expectation that QF will stump up an RedRoo everytime a OrangeStar is cancelled.

I would not want the reciprocal to occur though. A QF 747 replaced at the last minute by a JQ787. That would be worse than an intra-aircraft downgrade.

If you were in economy it wouldn't matter. QF already fly the 787 in virtually the same confirguration as JQ (one inch more legroom).

First point would be fascinating to know.

On the latter, very interesting. Both are leisure routes. Would JQ HNL passengers be paying (on average) more per kilometre because there's less competition with nonstops between Oz and HNL?

On domestic routes I've observed for a while that if say JQ has a failure of an A320 in Melbourne and can - up to a point - "choose" where a return flight can be cancelled to and from, more often than not if there's a MEL - BNK flight scheduled around that time it tends to get the chop while others don't. I'm simplifying things because there'll be more considerations, but I've seen that occur a few times so a pattern starts to emerge.
 
JQ8991 is operating from MEL to what looks like SYD on Sunday 14 April, probably due to the continuing unavailability of B788 VH-VKJ that is still in KIX for its 16th day. It took off from MEL at 1213 so should be in SYD by 1330 hours.

This is a further cost to JQ (and the QF Group) emanating from this inoperative aircraft.

Does anyone know what the target date (if there is one) is for VKJ's return to revenue passenger flights? Is the daily just because the Japanese air safety authority is examining it in microscopic detail, or do engine(s) or other components have to be replaced given what occurred?

QF6404 is not far off arriving in SYD (ex HNL) as the "charter" for JQ. Today it's B744 VH-OEG but on every other occasion, it's been VH-OEB doing the yo-yo. All but one rotation have run pretty much to time, which is good (unlike some QF mainline routes!)

JQ220, the 2210 hours scheduled arrival in MEL on Sunday (ex snowy ZQN) has been cancelled.

Hopefully before 8 weeks time when we fly back from Honolulu on Jet*. Could be interesting what to do with us. We booked in “J” on JQ using Qantas award points. Both WP. What would be our option?
 
Update. I’ll post this in the other thread too. Son reports that they were given exit row seats in Y and they received full Qantas service and food which he reports was good. DIL is 20 weeks pregnant so space would have been nice but I gather that people standing in the exit area were a bit of a bother.
 
JQ963 from CNS to ADL, the 1145 hours,took off at 1312 hours (A320 VH-VFH) so arrival is likely at 1546 this afternoon, 76 late.

The 1940 hours JQ143 from SYD across to CHC is predicted to depart an hour late.
