Jetstar-ing of Qantas

I can't understand why they want to putrefy the QF flight listings by peppering JQ in there. I bet heaps of people make the same mistake as me.
So more people can make a mistake and pay the same price for a JQ flight as a QF flight.

Just remember there are some of us that do not have the choice of a QF service out of our home port.
And that is fine.

What is wrong with displaying QF flights only and having a check-box to display JQ flights. That way we can continue to search for QF flights and if you really are desperate then you can choose to search for JQ flights as well.

Yes, I'd love to see that too. If I want to fly Jetstar I'll go to the Jetstar web page. If I want QF I'll go to the QF page. I've been stung before not paying enough attention and booking a JQ flight that I definitely didn't want.

The other issue I have is the JQ flights listed on the QF site is that in my experience they are always more expensive than if you were to book the same JQ flight on the JQ website. Not sure if this is always the case, but it seems to be from what I can see?

*Perth trans-con has its own thing happening. Pretty sure every flight has a meal choice on those.

That has been my experience - might be because it is allegedly an "international standard" for meal service...

I guess when flying for 4+ hours, you're going to cross into either breakfast, lunch or dinner in one time zone or another!

Hasn't been my experience except:
1) Qantas don't have the Jetsaver light fares - just the Jetsaver
2) Qantas don't offer the same promotional fares that Jetstar do.

Ah of course! I guess the only time I ever consider using JQ is if they have a really good sale on, so that's probably the only time I've ever taken any notice of the fares between the sites!

Yes, thats fair. All the more reason in my view to put in a 'check box' on the flights page to filter out JQ when they are of no interest to the passenger.

If you need or want JQ flights listed then you can still benefit from the QF/JQ tie-in.

Seriously QF255/256 appear a lot in the search engine and I find it remarkable that it is $1 more than the QF flight. That is a clear joke and an insult to my intelligence.

Splitting hairs but it would be much nicer if they just filtered out JQ flights and you click on the checkbox if you actually want to see JQ flights. I would guess that 92.4729% of people using the QF website do not want to see JQ flights.

Even better, yes. "Opt in" to the JQ services if you want them. :) As you say, most folks going to the QF website are there for QF flights.

Agreed.

Though I think I'd struggle to find people to agree that a sandwich qualifies as an appropriate 'dinner' as received in recent times on MEL-CBR (734) flights in the early evening. (and yes, the flight was advertised as having dinner service).

MEL-CBR does have a short flight time. Even though it is advertised as dinner, it would be near impossible to deliver a hot meal to every passenger on what would commonly be a 45 minute flying time from takeoff to landing (with even less time to deliver the service). Delivering a sandwich on a tray (which requires no preparation in the air) is hard at the best of times on this short flight, so please understand that a hot meal would be impossible to deliver.

Ack.
Though I would think it simplest to not advertise it as dinner.

Yep. Advertised meal as light snack or light refreshment might be more appropriate if thats all you think you can provide. Dinner is probably more than a sandwich or a slice of cheesecake or whatever in most Australian homes I'd guess, the language is important.

Short haul in the USA last time I was there, admittedly a few years ago now, they threw cheeseburgers and coke at us all down in cattle class :)

Its pretty easy to get something hot and tasty to the punters, doesn't always have to be silver service.

BA fly Manchester to London and always serve a hot meal in similar time. For your references just don't ask for anything that is not in their cart, as your request will be responded to with a growl.

Must have been a while ago - I've been traveling quite regularly within North America for the last 6 years and have never received a meal in Y as part of the fare. Even when advertised as a meal included, it is always meal for purchase, and then usually only sandwiches and snacks. For a hot meal, you pretty much have to fly J/F. That has included flights on American, American Eagle, United, Air Canada, West Jet, Alaska, Hawaiian, Go, and Virgin America. On short haul you're lucky to even get a bag of peanuts and a soft drink!

Yes, it was. 6-7 years. Still, why could they do a hot burger then on a short flight but we can't do one now? I think can't is really won't.

It was Continental as I recall. Had to pay for a cough set of headphones if you wanted to watch the cough movie :) Food was free though, burgers, coke, juice, peanuts and chips.

I remember being annoyed I had to pay for the phones which is probably why this flight has stuck in my mind ... that and the awfully tired look of the interior. The domestic USA jets get worked to death it seems.

Is 2007 a while ago?

I received a sandwich and a drink on an AA LAX-DCA red-eye flight and part of a QF Oneworld award.

Back when QF was "competing" with AN, a hot meal was served on CBR-SYD evening flights in economy. (They probably shared kitchens :p)

What irritates me no end is when I am searching across a week for the cheapest fare, the cheapest price quoted is often a JQ fare (which I do not want) and thus the "my dates are flexible" option is practically useless.
