Jetstar, not Qantas, as our national airline?

As for Jetstar becoming the Australian national airline? Well if that happens then I am.... well... will no longer regard myself as Australian....

And Alan Joyce wants his legacy to be that he was the man who closed Qantas International? Yeah Right.-and I'm Brad Pitts twin.

Whilst at least the author gets a couple of general things right which some less measured reporters/commentators do not:

1) the incidents being reported more frequently lately are (and have been) for the most part normal and part and parcel of being an airline (though he doesn't specifically mention that it happens to other airlines as well)

2) QF indeed are operating planes they would have counted on having retired by now due to delayed delivery of replacements (some 747s (A380), 767s (B787)) - though he fails to mention the 787 - not that I'm sure when this was originally targeted for delivery.

...I think the article is a fantasy, a puff-piece, just really posed as a far-fetched 'what if'?

On the negative side:

1) Is Qantas really our 'national airline'?

2) He appears to be confusing Ryanair with Aer Lingus (I can't find evidence of Joyce having worked with FR, happy to be corrected)

3) Jetstar moving upmarket? - really, in what way?

That's the best example of two faced biased 'journalism' I've seen in a while.

Two faced because I have no doubt these champagne socialist types like James Kirby would be one of these DYKWIA's that when checking in state "you can upgrade me to business class if you like" acting like they are the ones doing the airline a favour.

Biased because they totally ignore any other incident that happens to any other airline & totally mislead the public by exaggerating QF incidents way beyond what they are.

If that QF32 incident happened to some other airlines around the end result could have been a catastrophic loss of life.

Does he still fly Qantas? If he does it's hypocrisy beyond belief. If he has such disdain for the airline He should simply **** off & fly someone else. Problem solved.

As far as I know he was at Air Lingus from 1988-1996,at Ansett from 1996-2000 and joined QF in 2000 as head of JQ.
But I also stand ready to be corrected.
Cheers

Could we have that one more time with feeling? :p

Joyce grows Jetstar because it's all he knows. He hasn't got a clue what to do with a full service, premium branded airline. Of course he's talking it down because he doesn't want it to be apparent that it's his inability to run it which is the real issue. I very much doubt the Jetstar brand will ever be the national airline. A national airline is one which the majority of pax choose to fly by preference (at least that's a modern post govt ownership definition of it), I can't see that happening with Jetstar which is becoming more Asian by the minute.

The way the current and previous CEO's have treated Qantas it is no wonder that it is perceived to be going down hill.

At this rate the new 'National Airline' will be the reworked Virgin Blue (whatever the name) before to long.

I agree. It's the "accountant's" attitude which only looks at cost, not at what the market segments want. Many public companies have gone that route to their cost.

One of my gripes is the way that Q are moving so many services to "tourist destinations" over to Jetstar. I regularly fly SYD/CNS. After taking one Jetstar flight to "see what it was like" I now do my best to ensure that I never get on another. I prefer to pay a few more $ and get better service etc etc. Sometimes, I can end up with a QF flight costing less than Jetstar.

But then I avoid LCC wherever possible. Unlike my brother who recently flew LCC to Indonesia x CNS and had a horror trip over and back. He says "Qantas is too expensive" and will only fly Virgin / Jetstar.

It would be my supposition, that the demise of QFi, would result in the expansion of V (or its successor) into the space.

For one thing, Jetstar is much more focussed on growing its operations out of Singapore.

Failure, failiure, failure. Are these the qualifications needed to be CEO of Qantas?

By the way are you really Brad Pitt's twin? :p

When Jetstar is named our national airline I guarantee I will personally go out and kill someone.

That's a rather eloquent blunt way of saying I hope it never comes to that.

OT: You know what would be a real laugh, If Virgin Blue gave themselves / were given the slogan of 'Australia's flag carrier'

Just like what VS did to BA
