This was such a scam, and I got sucked in. Watch out.

I was booking a return flight to Bali, and for one of the legs it was cheaper to go by Virgin, so I called Jetstar and they confirmed they would book the cheaper leg at the 10% discount. They further said they could not book the return leg at the same time so it would have to be done as separate transactions.

So the person processed the first fare, and then she said she could book the second fare as well. So I agreed to do this, thinking that it was customer service. She then processed the second fare, which I paid on the credit card. When I got my credit card statement the second leg as actually $200 more per person than online (I had printed a copy of the fare).

Now here is the SCAM, when you book the second leg over the phone on the price beat guarantee line, they cannot book the same sale fare as on the internet, they can only book a full rate fare. So I was charged a full rate fare when it was cheaper to do it online. I was not told this at the time of booking and the lady on the phone was so insistent that she do it because it was easier for her and she had all the details anyway.

When I complained to Jetstar, they said they listened to the recording and they said that I had agreed to the full fare, because when the operator asked me was I happy to proceed to book the based on the ordinary fare, I had said OK. The customer service guy basically said it was policy for telephone staff not be able to book sale fares, and they were not obligated to advise me of this.

So in the end they offered a $100 Jetstar Voucher.

So to take advantage of the price beat guarantee, which was supposed to save me about $50. In actual fact it cost me an extra $400. What a bunch of scammers.

re: Jetstar Price Beat & (reservation centre = higher price) Scam - Beware

That sucks, but good to know for the future... I booked a price beat the other day, but both legs were price beat ones from Air Asia... But i made sure they read out the amount they would dedduct from my credit card so i could double check comparing to what I was expecting to pay...

It saved me about $600 over Jetstar prices and i got to leave and arrive back at much more civilised times than Air Asia's flights... Pity I didn't also check Virgin's prices as on the way back they may have been cheaper still, but used to Virgin not being particularly cheap....

How is this a scam?

How is this a scam?
Because JQ advertise a price beat which you cant use online and if you ring you cant beat the price online. So I agree it is a scam.

I disagree. I have purchased many price beats, the best being $9 from SYD/MEL. I have never been scammed yet and I bet the 100's of members on AFF who have also used the price beat have never been scammed.

So I ask again, how is this a scam?

Jetstar Price Beat Scam - Beware

The price beat works well but you really need to do your homework. Always best to book outbound and return separately - in fact this is often true for using JQ in general - it always pays to look at total AUD price for return vs two one ways (one in AUD and other in foreign currency).

re: Jetstar Price Beat & (reservation centre = higher price) Scam - Beware

No scam here. It's a great option, the Jetstar price beat. I use it all the time and saved lots of money and with the added benefit of lounge access at airports that have it.

re: Jetstar Price Beat & (reservation centre = higher price) Scam - Beware

The scam has nothing to do with the price beat. The scam is related to booking the return. The clear learning is to not book ordinary fares with them on the phone. When they offered to book the return non price beat fare we need to check the price, ask them to match the online price, and if they refuse tell them no thanks and book on line.

re: Jetstar Price Beat & (reservation centre = higher price) Scam - Beware

im wondering why the OP booked the return leg without knowing how much it would cost:confused:

what on earth? the OP was obviously being very careless. Having dealt with that call centre many times they repeat the price at least a couple of times during the call. If he agreed to the price on the phone then that's his fault. It is pretty obvious in this day and age there is usually additional booking fees when booking over the phone rather than online.

re: Jetstar Price Beat & (reservation centre = higher price) Scam - Beware

id add also that i do love the price beats from JQ (particularly after finding they worked on JQ35!), unfortunately 3K has retimed most of their flights away from Tiger so I can't get HKG-SIN-HKG $127AUD return anymore :( :(

Jetstar Price Beat Scam - Beware

How is it a scam? If its cheaper online just book it online.

Easy...

re: Jetstar Price Beat & (reservation centre = higher price) Scam - Beware

I think some of you are being a bit harsh on the OP here possibly because (like a few on here) he has gone for the tabloid headline which isn't actually the real story. Where he believe he was ripped off actually had little to do with the price beat.

I don't know about a scam but his post is a good warning to others to listen carefully when on the phone and that they can't do to ultra cheap fares over the phone when non price beat.

I however love Jetstar price beat.

There was a post on Facebook from someone who wasn't too happy about the extra cost involved although in this instance it was when a pax wanted to change the date of the return flight where the same fare was available. JQ wanted to charge them about $200.00 extra as the same fare was not available on the outbound flight however they weren't changing that flight at all.

It appears that if the forward and return sector are in the same pnr, even if only changing one flight both the forward and return sectors are repriced. All JQ airfares are priced individually on for each journey which can comprise more than one flight eg MEL/xSYD/HNL will be priced as a single fare MEL/HNL.

This is a slightly different set up from other airlines as when they have sales fares a return airfare prices is given ex Aust to Asia or the US may be AUD899.00 or AUD1299.00 return.

LCC sector fares are slightly different to the one way fares charged by full service airlines than tend to charge a lot more for one way fares.

It would seem in this case that it's better to book JQ flights separately for the forward and return journeys. I don't know if JQ repricing all sectors on a booking is due to the limitations with their software & not being able to reprice only part of the pnr.

Each airline is different and there can be advantages to having multiple flights in a single pnr. I had two Virgin America flights LAS/JFK - SAN/SFO booked in the same pnr so when I had to do a date change to both flights I was only charged USD50.00 total to make changes to each of the flights in the one booking. Had they been booked separately I would have had to pay USD50.00 for each pnr.

re: Jetstar Price Beat & (reservation centre = higher price) Scam - Beware

The issue is not the actual price beat, as they did beat the price on the first leg.

The issue is that Jetstar Price Beat Staff and customer service staff actually know they cannot place a Jetstar sale price fare by telephone, and they can only place a full fare via telephone. But they still entice you to book over the phone saying it is easier for them to do it as they have all the information anyway.

How would you feel if you called to get a price beat on a leg of a flight only to be stung an extra $400 on the return fare because they could not book the sale fare on thier website, and not told to book online. What I am doing is leting the public know about this, so they won't get scammed by the telephone staff to book a return flight that is not part of a price baet as you will get SCAMMED.

Large companies have a duty of care, and must to be deceptive in thier conduct.

Too me this smells of deceptive and misleading. JUST MAKE SURE YOU DON't GET CAUGHT OUT.

That may all be true, I was simply outlining what the OP feels is a scam without making any judgement. A number of people here seem to have misread the post and don't realise that the issue wasn't the price beat booking.not my problem if people mis read and I don't expect to be taken to task for clarifying their misunderstanding. Perhaps if don't ask the question if the answer isn't appreciated.

re: Jetstar Price Beat & (reservation centre = higher price) Scam - Beware

im wondering why the OP booked the return leg without knowing how much it would cost:confused:

Good questions, because I was booking the return leg from Bali, the leg was in Indonesian Rupee. I originally said to them I would just book the sale fare online, but was told by the operator they could do it easily for me as they had my details anyway. They didn't tell me that they could not book the sale fare, so when I agreed for them to book it they booked the full fare flight, and read back amount in Rupee, not in AUD that was online price. Now I didn't have my Indonesian Rupee converter handy with me, and the sale was ending at 8pm I agreed for them to book the flight.

Ma'af Bapak, Rupiah, Ya? Terima Kasih.

re: Jetstar Price Beat & (reservation centre = higher price) Scam - Beware

Initially yes, I only wanted to book the price beat, I told the opeerator I would book the other leg online, but was convinced by the Operator to book the return flight with them as they had all my details from the first flight. They said it would be easier for me. They were very nice about it and sounded they wanted to help. The deception is at no time did they say they could not place the sale fare and advise me that I should book online. Rather they convinced me to book with them and end up paying the full fare. This was $400 more than the sale fare. That is what is deceptive.
