There was no price beat scam yet look at the title of this thread. The title is a scam in itself. Your issue is simply with jetstar holidays telephone reservations

Hence why some comments have attempted to clarify this point, which is clear anyway, upon reading the OP.

Re: Jetstar Price Beat Scam - Beware

I have modified the title to hopefully correct it to be closer to the scenario. As to the situation, I must admit I have never made a booking over the phone where I have not confirmed pricing before giving the go ahead, and would OT do so should I encounter an agent who does not want to mention it, is that a scam, I am not so sure.

Re: Jetstar Price Beat Scam - Beware

Although I don't believe this is a scam as such, I reckon it was probably a Sales agent hungry for commissions and by bending the truth a little or not telling him to book online for sale price misled the customer into buying over the phone.
Whatever the reason I still think its wrong but also the OP should have done research on online prices first as well to be informed about decisions.

Live and learn, this is why I only use JQ if I absolutely have to, some of their 'rules/policies' are borderline deceptive in my opinion.
(For example, a few months ago I was booking a one-way flight SYD-AVV @$29 during one of their sales, with starter bundle, entered all my details chose my seat, etc, got to the payment page entered credit card pressed pay, then came up with error no seats available in fare class. Searched again now price was up to $69, called JQ and they said a seat must have been sold just before I clicked pay. The JQ staff said 'our prices are like an Auction you have to be quick to get a fare'. My argument was that you had quoted me $29 I accepted the offer and offered the money based on the quote so you should honour it. It'd be like going to Coles putting a loaf of bread in the basket with a price tag of $3, then you get to the checkout counter and the cashier takes the bread out of your basket and says sorry, go back to the bread aisle and pick the same loaf again and come back but now I will charge you $5, It's wrong JQ!!!).

This has happened to me before also, seems like a weakness in their IT that the fare you select is not taken out of circulation while you make your purchase.

Others may have a better idea if this is verging on bait and switch or not?

I've had it one time or other with several airlines, including Qantas. Their get-out card is that the price isn't guaranteed until the ticket is confirmed.

Re: Jetstar Price Beat Scam - Beware

Only read the first post, but sounds like you didn't pay attention.

To compare to a recent experience booking on Qantas, I called the hotline as I needed help, and had to check the price a few times, because the first time I was quoted $999 for a $300 fare, it was then brought down to $600, but I knew how much it would cost so made sure they got the right fare for me. If the fare had disappeared, I wouldn't have proceeded.

It's good to know all the details and have them written down in front of you before you pay, because sometimes accidents do happen. In my case, I eventually got my fare.

I thought that the VA QF TT and JQ websites had a "time out" period in their booking engine where if the user fails to proceed to complete payment within say 5-10mins the session just times out and you have to start out over again. Sounds like you may have just hit this time out period? But agree with some of your sentiments.

This has happened to me on DJ where I was trying to proceed with a booking at the normal pace (ie not going too slow that I'd be timed out) & suddenly the fare jumped up by $50.00.

In this case if it was just a simple time out, when you started again the same fare would still be on offer.

I think online booking engines are slightly different to a GDS which would hold the seat for about 20 mins. It would seem that when booking direct through airline websites there are nil guarantees until you end transaction & get the pnr ref.

I did the booking without delay, 3-4 mins from start to payment page.

When booking with QF once I get to the payment page the fare class is held.. This can be verified by expert flyer, but only when seats available are under 9.
For eg let's say there are 5 seats left in S class, once you get to pay page check EF S class will now be 4, if u close the payment window without any action S class appears as 5 again. So at least QF reserve a seatin the booking class before the payment is processed.
