Jetstar to boost international flying with new Brisbane Airport partnership

Do the airbridges really cost *that* much or is this seen as a way of projecting a low-cost image?
Not sure how much it costs to use a 'airbridge' at BNE Int'l, but during XJ's short stint on BNE-DMK, they also used the remote gates at BNE Int'l, and it saved them a few $$.
 
A bit strong to use the C word. If Jetstar didn't exist, someone else would fill the void, and unless you want to exclusively preserve flying for the wealthy, they have a place in the market.

And calling no airbridges an innovation seems like something straight out of the Qantas PR book. They've learnt well from their parents. 🤣

All depends on the airport though. I’m pretty sure I’ve walked across the tarmac at some airports to EasyJet flights, (and on the flip side I’ve also used airbridges for many Jetstar flights).

Based on the public rates noting JQ (and all the other majors like QF/VA etc) would have negotiated rates, it's ~8.25% cheaper to use a stand without an aerobridge for domestic flights.

On top of the $30.80 above there is an extra $3.89 intl security fee meaning at most the public rate BAC charge is $34.69 but if JQ is indeed getting a ~8.25% discount similar to what's offered at domestic then it's likely to be about ~$32.34.

It's also worth pointing out that JQ is geting QLD's AAIF funding (unknown dollar figure) for their flights with a 50/50 split from QLD Gov and BAC. As a result BAC is literally "paying" JQ to operate out of Brisbane and it's easy to see why they switched given the Gold Coast airport fees up to June 30 are $26.24 increasing to $28.64 this year. For an extra cost of just ~$4.07 per passenger which I'm sure they can easily add to tickets 😉 they get a much larger population catchment and also more funding from BAC.

At bit off topic but if I were the operators of OOL (QAL) I'd be concerned given pre covid they had 787's from Air NZ (sesaonal to AKL), Jetstar (to NRT plus in 2019 to ICN), Scoot to SIN also Air Asia continued the A330 to AKL (now they do SYD-AKL instead), Hong Kong airlines (until 2018 although that stopped for other reasons). From later this year they'll be down to just 3 international widebody flights per week!

According to the Qld presser, the AAIF only covers KIX/ICN and the AKL services. The NRT and DPS services are not subsidised, and a lot of the Queensland social media would be outraged if 'AAIF' was mentioned next to a new DPS services presser with comments such as "Mah taxpayer money is subsidising bogans to go to Bali" and other similar comments!

The DPS frequency increase was a whole lot of window dressing just to beef up the Brisbane announcement.

With the switch to all A321neo, BNE-DPS is actually reducing in overall seat capacity by 25 seats each week. 1x daily 787 = 2345 seats per week, whereas 10x weekly A321 = 2320 seats per week.

Out of curiosity, do you know how long the OOL-NRT route was covered by the AAIF for? Could it be possible funding for that route has expired and they’re moving the flight to BNE to rationalise SEQ 787 operations at one base?

Certainly not outside the realm of possibility. The Cairns base are supposedly getting the A321neo soon. Schedules show 2 daily CNS-based rotations to MEL operated by the A321neo from August 1st.
 
Good pickup it seems you are correct. Looks like 1 aircraft based in Cairns, that will be sucked up doing those two flights per day.

With Japanese inbound tourism suffering at the moment, a downgrade to Neo and 787s can go to Sydney or Melbourne would make sense.

I guess the only issue with that, is they do have a 787 crew and engineering base in Cairns. May create some crew shortages unless they ferry the pilots around.

They current 321neoLRs probably don't have sufficient range to do it with a decent payload. I'm sure once the XLRs come from 2024 they will be primed to take over the CNS 787 flying. I believe they can fly around 9-10 hours with a decent payload.

JQ did operate BNE-HNL on the B787 back in about 2012-2016, but then dropped it, sadly, and left the direct market to HA.

And courtesy of COVID, HA no longer operates the route either now......
I thought this was MEL and SYD only for some reason.

Big shame about the HA flights, those timings were perfect.
 
Does anyone know which lounge Jetstar offers 787 "business" passengers on their flights from Seoul to Brisbane? Could it be the new OneWorld lounge?
 
Currently (assumably) none out of BNE. The Lounge Access page for Jetstar Business 'MAX' passengers hasn't been updated in a bit.

I was wondering more about ICN... The flight is pretty new. I'm taking it next week back from Seoul. I will let you know. Same terminal as Qantas.... I was hoping JQ "business" pax might be able to use the new Oneworld lounge, but I guess that's unlikely. I'll just use one of the Priority Pass lounges instead. Would have been nice to try the Oneworld lounge.

Decor is nice, food was woeful though
 
Nah, no lounge. My flight left from gate 107, on the concourse - (you need to take a quick train to get there after immigration/security) There is a Sky Hub Lounge out there (if you have Priority Pass), but it is quite small. When I got there, there was a small queue outside waiting to get in. It was 1 -in 1 out, but relatively fast moving. The food and beverage selection inside was limited but adequate. (no shower or bathroom inside the lounge either) The flight started boarding a few minutes early and the whole thing was pretty efficient. No priority baggage for business class passengers coming off the plane.
