I flew both CNS-NRT and CNS-KIX in the past year. I was surprised to find around half the passengers were Japanese. I guess Cairns still attracts foreign tourists.

Heavy inbound market which is largely dominated/tied up by JQ.

VA in partnership with NH and the Queensland Government (throgh the AAIF subsidy program) have attempted to operate a competing service through using their HND slot but wasn't able to make it into a workable service without the taxpayer subsidy, thus VA finishing up the HND service once the Queensland taxpayer funding finishes up.

Largely low cost younger Japanese travelers. I’ve done the route once, and a large chunk seemed to be Japanese in the 20s.

I’d say this route would be destined for a A321XLR at some point.

QF mainline also flew CNS-NRT in the 90s before it was briefly taken over by AO's all-Y 763s (as well as AO operating CNS-KIX). The AO services was subsequently taken over by the JQ A330s.

AO services were subsequently ended in favour of JQ with AO crews operating for QF mainline (as a separate 763 crew staff business) briefly before they eventually folded AO back into QF mainline.
