1st question: anyone know what happened to JL52 today? It flew for an hour and came back to SYD.
I saw it parked at the airport on the way home tonight and got me worried about my up coming trip 28th March.

2nd Question, I have two bookings coming up: JL52 to haneda to connect to JL6 the same day.
They are on two separate PNRs. If I checked in both flights in SYD and it diverts, will JAL put me on the next flight to JFK or they won't because separate booking?

Would travel insurance cover it then?

Also my JL6 is part of a OWA booking with other flights (all remaining JL flights)

Flying for a hour implies that it went somewhere. It’s really just flown a large circuit. The flight path doesn’t tell me what was wrong, but whatever it was it has happened in the first couple of minutes of the flight. If you have a listen to LiveATC you might be able to work it out.

For the second question, as they are separate tickets, JAL is not obliged to amend the second flight if you miss it due to delays on the first.

Your travel insurance /may/ cover you, depending on what coverage you have for schedule delays. (i.e. some do, some don't, so you need to check your policy terms.)

I spent a day going throught AMEX plat insurance and also searched SCTI, Covermore and Travelinsuranz.

It doesn't look good... don't think it will cover business seats for 3 routes (part of OWA) which will be cancelled if JL52 is delayed :
HND - JFK
LAX - HND
HND - SYD

What should my back up plan be if JL52 does get delayed? I'm hoping for extra rewards seats to be available a day or two earlier but it probably won't happen due to peak period.

Should I get cash fares and fly a day earlier? JL52 does have good on time performance but it is still risky. I can't see any backup routing to get me to HND by 6.30pm for my JL04 flight.

Can anyone think of another alternative?

The turnback last weekend was maintenance related.

What exactly has changed in your calculus between booking it and now that you'd be considering a cash fare? The potential for a disrupt hasn't changed because of a single turn back... It's an anomaly.

You're right that there aren't any alternative same-day routings to make it to HND by 1830. I wouldn't think to be worried though, JL52 is typically very reliable.

Be very nice to the ground staff and hope that they can help. That's... kind of it. You may or may not have better luck if you ask during check-in to try to get checked (and bags tagged) through to JFK.

Is your SYD-HND a cash or award fare? If award fare, why weren't you able to put it onto the same OWA?

I guess its the nerve rising getting closer to the date. Wouldn't be too bad if it was 1 flight but the OWA still have 3 flights left to it.

Syd to hnd is award booking separate from OWA. I have a 2 part OWA and part1 finished in HND so I'm heading there to start part2.

Never again will I do this to myself. Will always leave 1 extra night in between flights.

Guessing the flight departed on-time and the connection was made !
One of the apps says the average delay is 12 minutes and on-time is 98/100

Yup. JL51 arrived 30min late from HND but everything was all good.

During check-in they first told me they couldn't check through my bags all the way to JFK due to the complex booking. They said the system wouldn't let them check me in for the HND to JFK flight and that I had to collect my bags at HND. I challenged him on this and said that's not possible because that means I have to collect bag, go through custom and then check in which could have long lines.
He then said, dw they can have call japan and have someone wait and help me when i get off the plane. U didn't want to risk it and flying JL on multiple tickets before i know they can check me in so after another 5-10 minutes of pleading my case he finally got the JAL manager who called through HND to tell them the situation and boom computer says ok. Tickets and luggage tags printed all the way to JFK
