I do have two main questions:
1) Seeing as though I travel only for leisure: what are the dress standards applicable? (i.e. what is the minimum dress standard? Smart casual? Jeans acceptable? --Please be assured I am not a bogan in board shorts and thongs!! :D, just wanting a rough idea of where the line in the sand is)
2) What type of alcoholic beverages are available?? Wide range of beers? Spirits? ;)

This is qantas pub we are talking about - board shorts and thongs are completely acceptable.

  1. I would assume smart casual would make sense, but it really depends where you’re making the flight from I suppose, as certain dress standards are applicable in certain places. I’m sure all would agree a high vis vest will get you into any lounge though. :p
  2. Alcoholic beverage are available after a certain hour domestically and all day internationally. I believe it’s 1/2PM now, but you’d have to ask other, more frequent flyers. As for the drinks list, you can get Blue Tongue and Crowne and dependant on the port, others, while basic spirits and house wines are available, along with a sparkling usually.

Join Qantas Club without paying the join fee

Dear All

I have just joined Qantas Club on their special ($435 for 1 year) with no join fee. This special was on for 90 hours expiring at midnight on 14 Oct 10. I know I have done the deal, but was this a good offer to take up? I am a bronze QFF Member with about 500,000 points. I very rarely pay for QF tickets other than highly discounted ones between MEL and SYD, rather using my points for International travel, thus not accruing any status.

The benefits of the Qantas Club seem attractive (use of lounge, dedicated check-in and 10kg extra baggage - and HOPEFULLY I will be included in the rollout of the new "smart luggage tags" due in MEL later next year).

Do I have a balanced approach to this or have I been "marketed to" by QFF and bought Qantas Club Membership irresponsibly?

Thanks

Re: Join Qantas Club without paying the join fee

Its a personal call, however the various corporate club memberships often are better value such as the one available to the members here depending on how long you stay a member.

Re: Join Qantas Club without paying the join fee

500,000 points and no status! That's a lot of discount flying between Sydney and Melbourne.

Which means, that if you feel like the lounge (and other benefits) are worth it to you, then it's worth it. Everyone is different. I find the benefit to me is the once a year (or twice) trip to Europe allows me an extra 10kg of checked baggage. That alone makes it worth it to me. The lounges, priority check in etc are just a bonus.

You may find the same as me. However, if you fly less than once a month and don't need the extra baggage allowance anywhere, then it might not be worth it.

Gentlepeople...just read this thread and noticed a discussion about Qantas Club members NOT being able to use Priority checkin-domestically any longer. Have I read this correctly.
The website today says:-
Dedicated check-in
To help avoid queues, members may use The Qantas Club priority check-in areas available at most airports. If there is no dedicated Qantas Club check-in, you may check in at the Business counter before any Qantas flight, regardless of your fare class.# You must be travelling on a Qantas operated service with a Qantas flight number. If only carrying hand luggage, and travelling on a Qantas* or Jetstar marketed and operated flight, you can also check in at most major domestic Australian or New Zealand Qantas Club lounges.
Am I missing something?

Thanks

You see how it ends with a #, you then need to look a bit further down and see what the point of the # was:

# Note - Domestic check-in changes
From 1 February 2011, with the introduction of Next Generation Check-in, access to priority check-in counters at domestic airports will no longer be available for Qantas Club members. This privilege is still offered for Qantas International flights.

Re: Join Qantas Club without paying the join fee

Thanks Markis10

What are you referring to when you talk of "various corporate club memberships"

Thanks

Re: Join Qantas Club without paying the join fee

Markus10, my Law Society offers members QClub membership for its members as follows:-

Take advantage enjoy the following discounted Qantas Club membership rates.
1 year membership
$275.00 (normally $405)
2 years membership
$475.00 (normally $730)
Joining fee
$230.00 (normally $370)

I would renew under this scheme on 1 Nov 2011.

Is this the kind of Corporate Scheme you are referring to?

Thanks

Re: Join Qantas Club without paying the join fee

As you have not had to pay the joining fee, and will renew each year at corporate rates I think you will be happy with your decision.
You will particularly appreciate the lounges, priority check in, and baggage allowance when you travel overseas.
And you should enjoy the lounges domestically.
I also find I get better seating choices being a Qantas Club Bronze member.

Re: Join Qantas Club without paying the join fee

Thanks Ric

When you say better seating choices do you mean when one checks in-online 24 hours prior to departure or is there another benefits I do not know about?

Thanks

However with the PCE system coming into play next year, that may change.

your corp scheme has better rates than the corp scheme on this website, so nothing you need to worry about.

Generally you’ll be allocated something a little better than a regular Qantas Bronze member. So it’s better, but nothing amazing. If you log on right when OLCI opens though, you might manage to move yourself to the front of the plane ;)

As for your points, you should consider JASA’s and if travelling internationally maybe FASA’s (use the search, you’ll find a lot of information on them) that should allow you to attain status while also spending miles for flights, sometimes at the same rate as "classic" awards that don’t allow for earning status and points.

Huh! Who said the Qantas lounges are going to be overcrowded after 1 February 2011? ;)

Gentlepeople, I read from a prior post (not sure who's as I can’t find it) that one may be able to book an Any Seat Reward for the same amount of points as a Classic Award and in so doing, earn miles and achieve status credits. Am I understanding this correctly? I assume the Any Seat Reward points differ based on demand and thus flying "low-season" is "cheaper" than flying in "high season". My question is, has anyone seen the points on these 2 choices at parity, ever?

Thanks

Please create a new thread for this or put the question in the any seat threads to get more of an answer, as its called going off topic. There are some cases where an anyseat award is cheaper than a classic award, the cheapest any seat awards are when there are classic awards available.
