Qantas Asia strategy update

Qantas has advised the ASX that discussions with Malaysian Airlines on a partnership have been discontinued as the two airlines could not reach commercially agreeable terms.

Looks like they need a new parter for QantAsia, or RedQ, or whatever it is called....

Re: Qantas Asia strategy update

Will add more weight to those screaming that it was a negotiation tactic....

Malaysians probably wanted too much of the pie again and QF are smart enough to know that MH is inherently corrupt.

Re: Qantas Asia strategy update

Two outcomes potentially from this - further calls for AJ to resign due to lack direction for the business. Or QF take the chance to rethink their reductionist (apologies to reductionist) strategy for QFi and maybe consider a base overseas to get cheap labour rather than an airline overseas...

Re: Qantas Asia strategy update

Finally that entirely idiotic idea seems to be off the table... Maybe we can now get rid of Mr. Jet star and work on improving QF mainline? Dream on...:-|

Re: Qantas Asia strategy update

Perhaps an outcome of this strategy change, may be for Jetstar franchisees to introduce European-style Business Class to their A320s?

Re: Qantas Asia strategy update

Why doesn't the board just demote Joyce to CEO of Jetstar? He is obviously passionate about the low cost model, the public would be happy with this and he can forget about the headache that is QF international and let someone else figure out the mess. He can then grow Jetstar however he wants (which he already seems to have done).

Because he is doing a good job as CEO of Qantas Group.

Re: Qantas Asia strategy update

Where will all the A320s/A320neos go? Some to Japan, but the rest??

Bet your left one that they will also end up on qf mainline. Remember the 738s will be 15+ years old by the time they start coming in. And the carbon tax will be in fully by then, so they will be watching their emissions

Yes. Very easy to do, block the middle seats in the front 2 rows when needed, and provide a free meal from the cart. Maybe add 1.5" seat pitch to both by removing 0.1" from the seat pitch over the rest of the plane.

To be honest as much as everyone loves to b#ch and moan about Jetstar, for the non-tier economy passenger, it many ways it is superior to legacy carriers in other parts of the world (eg US). Give me a pleasant Jetstar Asia A320 flight any time to DL or AA domestic in economy on an MD80. 3K would make a good addition to oneworld, it would just need to give some consideration to Emeralds and Sapphires and whilst not luxury over shorter length flights would be more than adequate. Still not so sure about JQ though ......

Re: Qantas Asia strategy update

I unfortunately think this will mean the continuation of the slow death for Qantas International.

With a low cost Asian base
- Morning flights to the Asian hub to enable onward connections
- Ability to support traffic from secondary ports (ie Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide) hubbing to various Asian / European destinations
- More destinations in Asia/Europe at a cheaper prices (on your own/50% metal will always enable a better price than via a codeshare on someone else)

Without a low cost Asian base
- Flights will continue to be afternoon for the continuation to London
- I see further dropping of secondary ports
- Continued loss of pax flying anywhere but London, Frankfurt, Singapore, Bangkok
- More expansion of Jetstar at expense of Qantas

Re: Qantas Asia strategy = database, database, database

IMO the Jetstar franchise should not join oneworld: What Qantas needs to do, is - increase the size of its database in Asia.

So Asians, flying around Asia on Jetstar need to be corralled into QFF. (To be able to enjoy loyalty privileges.)

To use oneworld to effectively increase loads (by leveraging custom from partner airlines' databases), oneworld product and interlining passengers should be travelling on QF coded Jetstar services. (Not surprising this is happening now!!! Thus Qantas continues to manage this oneworld relationship, without ceding any authority to Jetstar franchisees.) Additionally sale of these QF code services should be reserved exclusively for traffic originating outside AsiaPacific or connecting from Qantas flights.

Now that's the best of bothworlds, not just oneworld.

Agreed, I think CX does something with cabin crew bases across labour to leverage even cheaper labour costs than HK - I've met cabin crew from Phillipines etc that I assume are only on local market contracts.

Right on!! The Malaysian government would never relinquish control over MAS! But then again shouldn't Qantas know this in the first place??? Afterall, there have been ex QF executives working there.
