I'm looking forward to flying JQ 7/8 between Mel and Beijing (Pek) from 24 Nov. Transits in Sin. A$2,360 for 440 SCs (A$5.36 / SC) flying JQ Business Max is a good deal. Ok I know it is not real J but it is OK (even better if you get row 1!) and for the money it is a fantastic deal.

Anyone else considering using this new JQ service?

Frankly no. The 12+ hours in SIN on the return is evil. As is the arrival time in SIN.

Also, I reckon the SCs will be calculated as though it were a through flight rather than discrete flights. Therefore less SCs and points, much like the flights to the UK where you stop for a short time in Asia.

CX via HKG would have to be a much better option.

Wonder what the plane will be used for whilst the pax are enjoying the delights of Changi AP?

i think it's great. will do it one of these days! I've heard many good things about Changi

I don't know how you calculate 440sc's when MEL-LHR in J is 480, but based on my last trip to PEK, it was 90sc's and that was mel-syd-pek, milage monkey also works out J as 180sc. comes in at 13.1/SC so not good value.

From my experience JQ credits SC just like QF do. On a sector / physical flight basis. Only DJ seems to do the start point to end point SC bit.

I guess it will come down to how it is ticketed to a large extent. If they ticket it as MEL-PEK then that is what you will get.

Not true. If the flight number is the same (which it is) it is calculated without the stopover. if you change flight numbers, you will earn SC's for each leg.

^ A flight is a trip with a single flight number. If you have to change aircraft but the flight number doesn't change, it is considered the same flight. If the flight number changes during your journey, even if you continue on the same aircraft, this is considered two flights.

What I said is true if the flight number changes. If not then you are correct. But as the Sin/Pek service does not yet have a fight number, it is currently JQ7* or JQ8* it will depend on what JQ do once they get the official approval for the service.

Seems only Mel and Per (no J to Sin) has routing to Pek so far, so very early days yet on this service and how to get the max SCs.

I did a dummy booking a while back and it showed up as JQ7 there and JQ8 back, So I am guessing it will be on the same flight number. pity as it would have been a good earner.

AFAIK, they will be JQ7 and JQ8, with the * just being about the regulatory approval disclaimer.

I dare say there will be more opportunities as the SIN hub develops.

Given how miserly JQ are with SCs and points can you really see them changing flight numbers and giving people more points than they have to?

I reckon the earn will be:

Zone 7
Miles 5,801-7,000

Disc Y 40
Full Y 80
J 160

How much does the cost balloon if you book as 2 returns/4 flights, with a proper stopover in SIN?

Sin/Pek/Sin A$1,787, 200 SCs.
Mel/Sin/Mel A$1,768, 240 SCs.

So A$3,555 for 440 SCs versus $2,360 for 320 SCs or A$1,195 for 120 more SCs.

Need to call JQ to do multi-city as not available on line. That may be lower cost than 2 tickets.

I will NEVER handover $3,555 to JQ for one trip as long as I live

I have no problems with JQ *Class. Exceptional value for the money. Have flown the JQ 29/30 service more times than I can count. Only ever once had a late departure from Mel (terrible that 6 extra hours in the FLounge!) and that was caused by a engine change at Mel. Except for the seat pitch being 38 inches (row 1 is OK), the food, wine and staff are top class. Equal to or better than any J service I have had with any airline.

Would I spend A$3,555 with JQ for those 2 sectors? No. Why? Because I will find a way to get it at a lower cost and still get the 440 SCs.

a bit off topic, but QF has a sale on J fare starting in PEK.

from memory, it was return PEK-BNE/SYD/MEL for about $3600..

only catch is you have to start in PEK..

works very well for me as i travel to china all the time so all i have to do is just a one way JASA to PEK, and then keep doing the sale J fare.

In terms of SC, it is 480 return to BNE as i go through HKG and SYD

Did you try a qantas multicity starting somewhere other than MEL? Say ADL. Pick a QF flight for the first leg. Should work ok provided they include the JQ flights, which they usually do.
