JQ 787 Nightmare-liner to Bali

I flew JQ to DPS a few months ago - also in row 10 of economy on the outbound, and in "business class" for the overnight return. I was in 10C (on the aisle), and found it just bearable. The seats really are very narrow though, and the curvature of the wall into your shoulder was very noticeable on another flight I did in 10A.

The overnight return from DPS was horrible. The service was actually not bad, and I rather enjoyed the catering. But those seats are worse than Qantas Premium Economy seats - really uncomfortable and not at all ideal for trying to sleep.

As an aside, just think - Qantas is also planning to go with a 3-3-3 Y configuration for their 787s to be used on ultra long-haul flights...

As unpleasant as the Y cabin on the 787 is, when SYD-HNL-SYD pop up at sub $500 it's pain I'm willing to go through.

Ive done Y to Dps ex MEL . I found row 10 quite ok and im a large guy but i sat on the aisle not the window. Row 44 centre seats are also very good. I had no issues with service and there is a daytime flight dps-mel which is much better than the redeyes. For a 5.5 hr trip I have no issue with it. I think its far far superior to a Tiger B737.

I took the 787-9 on Scoot and it seemed the cabin was much wider than the 8, with any luck it won't be an issue for QF

edit: boeing says the cabin width is identical between the two :(:(

How is the JQ 787 configuration different to RJ? Admittedly I only flew HKG-BKK in bulkhead but it was fine.

In terms of seat width its no different to any 9 abreast airline which is basically all of them. Its not as bad as the op made out in my experience. However the A330 was so much better.

You lucky [person], what I won't give to be on a 787. My JQ+DPS trip is in 3 weeks, A320 ADL-DPS-ADL. I've selected 20D and 29D, in the hope people are think the front is best. Never thought I'd do it, but conference.
Is there a lounge in bali that's accessible to QF status?

The flights out to Eastern coast on Jetstar are awful - departing at dreadful o'clock for a five hour flight. Any benefit of the holiday sucked out by that one flight. This time we are travelling direct ADL - DPS then departing at 8am to Perth on the day after the AFL Grand Final, transiting in Perth for a few hours, then on Qantas back to Adelaide arriving around 8pm. The lounge in Perth will be well used,

I'm not looking forward to an a320, and the 7 pm departure doesn't help either. I did consider breaking it up with options via DRW or CNS. I thought the MEL JQ 787 to DPS might have been usable if getting the 6am ADL-MEL flight on QF. But I didn't want to spend the extra money.

The short answer is "no". But you can pay to use the TG Lounge, which is quite good and costs around $33 for entry.

Ta. It's a late night departure on last day of conference. Likely to be some company. Wonder if a mob of scientists can try being loud and obnoxious drunks? ;) I also have priority pass access that I could look into.

Be warned that you only get one free alcoholic drink in that lounge ;)

Having flown JQ recently to Fiji I understand what you mean about the pay-as-you-go meal service taking up far too much time (even on an A320). There are stronger words for how it went, but without using them, I can see the value of the full service method where you offer a choice and move on quickly, or provide a snack to all if there's only 1 choice. Allows them to move quickly through the cabin and then look after the pax they initially served, who are by now finished/looking forward to something else. Unfortunately, I don't see how they could streamline the process on an LCC, short of buying before departure, which it seems no one seems to do anyway. It would certainly save weight if you only loaded what your passengers definitely want/have bought compared to a multitude of different things they can decide on when they're onboard.

Thank you all for confirming my decision never to set foot on a JQ aircraft.

Yep - in Y, on JQi, the A330s were heaps better, comfort wise.

I think Y-class "service" varies a lot on how full it is. I've found it quite OK many times.

100% agree. The A330s were good. Especially the 2-4-2 layout. So much better than 3-3-3.

If you think the Dreamliner is cramped for 3 hours to Bali , try the 737 Per- Sing for 5+ hrs ,then you'll know what Cramped is

The Dreamliner doesn't fly any 3 hour route between Australia and DPS.

To compare like for like, give me the QF 737 over the JQ A320 on the PER-SIN run any day...

Ok, I'm not understanding the meal thing. I have a strong impression from my JQ 787 flight to SIN and from BKK that they have almost no meals for sale if you don't preorder. Fiji is a bit shorter and would be different, I guess. But surely Bali would have a similar restriction.

i do/used to fly JQ BNE>LST and am on the tall side. Looking at, almost certain i will, change over to VA to get the extra legroom. I know it will cost more, and take longer, but i think that is a small price to pay.............:D

Unless you're in an exit row or row 3 on the 737, I think you'll find the legroom on Virgin just as disappointing...
