JQ boarding calls in QF Clubs - exception or the rule?

My 2 Syd F lounge experiences with JQ Have been flights have been mixed.

1st time, time can fly when you are living it up in the lounge :) our dessert was being served as our flight was called. In a panic we scoffed down dessert, 5 minutes later final call made and we bolted to gate only to still see a reasonable queue at gate.

2nd time, went to toilet when boarding call made, then leisurely made way to gate and shocked to see no queue and I'm the 2nd to last to board.

bottom line, there's a time on your ticket. It's the passengers job to get themselves to the gate at the time printed on the ticket.
And if the flight is delayed, you are likely to get more information about it at the gate.

I guess if you want want to rely on boarding calls, but not sure whether they are reliable, it's always an option to ask the lounge dragons to call the gate to confirm the announced information is correct. ;)

As both QF & JQ have separate systems neither airline can access the other's system nor do they communicate by radio. You may as well ask DJ what time the QF flight is boarding - how would they know?

I nearly got caught out once in SYD when I had a 1600 departure for BNE I mistakenly was thinking it was 1625 which was actually the arrival time in BNE (daylight savings). I hadn't heard any boarding calls in the lounge and was texting my lil bro who knew it was a 1600 dep when he replied "is your flight delayed".

Couple of interesting observations you've put down; they have separate systems as they are separate entities with the same parent.

And you didn't hear a Jetstar boarding call in the QF lounge.

Hmmmm. Personally I keep an eye on my mobile device known as a watch.

I think you are confusing 1 or 2 missed calls as opposed to the majority. I have not seen one unreliable call made from the F Lounge yet. And QF know I am in the lounge so they will make sure i am informed of the flight boarding.

I think you are being incredibly shirt sighted and uninformed with your comments not knowing how the F lounge actually operates.

Merely stating it's your own responsibility to get to the gate on time, and you shouldn't rely on a announcement.

OP told the story of how 'pax missed flight and let fly with a tirade of expletives that would make a trooper blush.' And I'm saying it's the pax's own fault.

Not sure what there is to be short sighted and uninformed about it.

The point seems to be getting lost. I'll repeat - yes of course we all have a responsibility to catch our flight, but if the established practice is for announcements to be made (as it is) the the airlines have a responsibility to do it properly. If Qantas doesn't work on the same system as JQ and can't guarantee that accurate boarding announcements will be made, then perhaps they should adopt the LHR practice of no announcements - but until they do so, they have a responsibility to get it right. Clearly both parties to the contract of carriage each has a responsibility of it's own.

Thats exactly what I've been trying to say!! :)

My point to you originally was you said if it is not consistent it shouldn't be done at all. I said I have not seen it being inconsistent in any lounge I have been in. So my point is there is no evidence that aside from a couple of calls of JQ boarding calls not being made when they should be.

So how about that announcement I received a few years ago in LAX on my way to a connecting flight... where my time on the ticket had *changed* (this was back in paper ticket days I will disclose)?

Sorry to say but 'get with the program'. I've never been in a lounge where boarding calls are not 'consistent', this is in QP's, J lounges and various F Lounges. The lounge staff have always, in every airline lounge (that makes announcements) been excellent with updates and information.

I suggest you spend more time in lounges in the USA where boarding calls are not announced, and delays are frequent. It's a pain. Especially with the lack of displays around telling you, and the sheer number of flights on the display, trying to find your flight can be like a needle in a haystack.

I'm not going to walk possibly 500-600m from a lounge to a gate to find out my flight is delayed 20/30/60 minutes. I have my lounge access, I intend on relaxing there, rather than standing around the gate waiting to board.

I have almost missed a QF MEL-BNE flight because it wasn't announced over the PA.

So, I basically no longer trust that the PA announcements will be 100% reliable.

Since then my strategy has been to ask the lounge staff if they are doing boarding announcements and then enquire back at the desk if there's been no announcement by the time boarding should have commenced.

Having said that, I find that they are particularly good at the Qantas F lounge with remembering your face and knowing what flight you are waiting for.
