JQ intl to dom flight operated from intl

There's no need to "see" - it has been made very clear to you there is one, and only one, correct answer which is that the flights are treated as an international-to-international connection, using transit security in SYD and baggage fully checked through ( to be collected and customs entry at MEL). Let's not confuse the OP with speculation about how it could be different in an alternate world, when frequent travelers and experts have already confirmed how it actually works.

It doesn't fit squarely into either category and whether not you are happy with the terminology, is not really important to the correct answer in terms of how Jetstar actually operates these flights. The important part for this discussion, is that the tag flight is *treated* as international - i.e. outside border controls - for all relevant purposes.
Hey, I'm just going off what Qantas was highlighting in their response to the Aviation Green paper here where at page 104 they state:
On international flights into Australia where the flight has an onward domestic leg with the same flight number, passengers are able to clear immigration at the final Australian international airport, however, the same provision does not apply if there is a change of flight number when the flight is still a domestic leg of an international flight.
For example, QF 10 London – Perth – Melbourne passengers have the benefit of transiting in Perth and being cleared in Melbourne. However, if a passenger on the same QF10 London – Perth changes in Perth to travel on QF6 Perth – Sydney, they must clear immigration in Perth with their bags, recheck in for the QF6 flight and clear back through immigration.
Passengers on a domestic leg of an international flight also require an ‘Orange D’ sticker to be manually added to their boarding pass with their form of identification handwritten onto the sticker by airline staff. The requirement for noting the form of identification inhibits the use of digital solutions to replace the sticker and delivery of self-service.
If you're more familiar with such procedures than Qantas, I shall defer to your superior knowledge though.

What Qantas do in Perth is hardly an example of what JQ do in Sydney given the swing gate operation in Perth

There are similar examples of passengers having to recheck on international flights in MEL and SYD, at least on Qantas (e.g. here at post 54, and here for example). It's not just a Perth thing.

Maybe JQ does indeed have different arrangements. I can't say I know myself...

I guess all of us who have actually done this on QF in SYD are just making it up?
