Just Another July Weekend Trip Report

You didn't mention the war? Well maybe once, but you think you got away with it.

Not sure what you mean by that, but that's not the right answer to what's so peculiar about how I wrote this report.

Nice write up! One tip, and I'm not being an arrogant, supercilious [person] in this (for once) The time thing, UTC+10 is kilo time so you could save some characters by using 0600K.

UTC being Zulu. +1 is alpha, +12 is Mike, -1 is November and you should be able to work it out from there. Only thing it doesn't work for Adelaide.

Nice to know. I wanted to be a true "hardcore" in a way (like those crime or military shows on TV) and quote everything in Zulu time, but I thought it cruel to make everyone remember to add 10 hours (albeit not difficult) to the quoted times. (The inspiration for switching to this style was that my original idea for this TR was to write it like a detective's log going undercover on our trip. Kind of like some of those self-narrated film noire movies from ages ago.)

I was just really repeating your last hint. You didn't mention the name of one particular lounge - "the war". Bit of a famous faulty towers quote.

I did like the writing style very much. I think you hit it well.

Another Hint.....

This sentence does not break the rule that my TR had to adhere to.

This sentence, on the other hand, does break the rule, but you'll find that it only breaks it once.

Of course, I could keep setting up different examples to help you out, such as this long sentence where the rule is broken three times.

Alternatively, maybe this hint has jabbered on too long. Now the previous sentence did not break the rule you are looking for, but this sentence breaks it once.

Finally, there are 5 paragraphs in the main part of this post, and this paragraph will be the last one of this hint. I can tell you that this paragraph breaks the rule four times (actually the rule is broken an extra time by reading over this paragraph with a critical eye. Try reading it out aloud.)

No compound sentences?

Thanks for the TR and the menu, which interestingly enough another member found on the Rockpool website - I'm curious though, how did you manage to get a 'lounge-procured snack' for the flight? Was it off the menu or pre-made on the buffet?

Tempted to try one of those Cafe Vue lunch boxes, but might pass if there's some decent snacks available in the lounge.

Nope. Try again!

The 'lounge-procured snack' was from the servery, not the menu. Don't think they'd take too kindly to having something ordered from the restaurant, then wrapped "to-go".

I said 'lounge-procured snack' because saying 'a snack procured from the lounge' or 'taken from the buffet' would break the rule. ;) (Another little hint!)

Admittedly, the last times I've been in SYD and MEL lounges, the snacks haven't been all that spectacular. More like bar nibbles to keep you in your comfy couch seat than a nice light snack. These sandwiches they had on offer were a great offering - tasty, not dry as a bone and an interesting combination of ingredients (including the bread!).

Active rather than passive voice? ;)

Got it!

You can't use the letter F (or the sound, hence why the critical eye was needed to pick up the F in 5).

edit: which is rather clever and now sounds obvious for an F lounge run TR that doesn't even mention F lounge once :) You gave away too much in your last hints, I applied engineering logic and solved your 5 paragraphs as simultaneous equations ;)

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner!

Well done, awilcockson - you have successfully guessed the rule! That is exactly it - the whole report is written without using the letter F. Although, if you were to expand (spell out) every instance of 4 and 5 in the report, that would break the rule.

The sound wasn't the key, it was the appearance of the letter itself. For numbers, using 4 and 5 is sort of cheating, but for the flight numbers I could hardly not put them in without sounding odd or suspicious. Some concessions made in not using the letter F:
  • Couldn't say "frequent flyer", "AFF", "First", "take off".... and most commonly, "of" and "from". The number of times I had to rewrite and re-edit to remove instances of "of" was incredible.
  • Couldn't say I sat in row 4 (well, I tried not to).
  • The name of the 737-400 we flew on MEL-SYD was called "Swift".

The first hint I gave (alluding to a previous report here: http://www.australianfrequentflyer....hotos/anzac-weekend-2010-whole-lot-22909.html) should probably make much more sense now ;)

My "give away" hints were going to be along the lines of a broken typewriter etc., but well done on getting it!

Did you really use engineering ingenuity in the last hint? Sounds almost like you developed a small program to lexicographically determine the answer.... :p :D

Sure did, although the program was developed and running in my mind ;)

At this point, I grabbed a seat and decided to munch down on my lounge-procured snack.

DSC02776.sized.jpg

Curry bread and chicken sandwich with almond mayo, accompanied with a San Pelligrino. Delicious.

Finally got a chance to try these - absolutely right anat0l, a really tasty snack - certainly blows away the onboard fare on JQ, and just the right size for a SYD-MEL hop. Wishful, but any chance of these coming to DOM J lounges please? ;)

Thanks for writing the trip report, only just read it now, and I even get a mention. :)

Due to the boat show I wasn't able to attend the F lounge run but I can always count on anat0l to write a good report, and include a decent amount of photos.
