Hi there - I'm new here, and hoping fellow members can help out with some advice / suggestions please.

I've started travelling frequently again this year (after an absence of some years). 95% of my flights have been domestic with Qantas and Jetstar.

I went from Bronze to Silver a few months back, and yesterday after a flight to Perth (to watch the cricket!), my status points went to 690 - 10 shy of 700 points and gold status. I actually thought I had done enough to get to the 700, but miscalculated status credits on one of the sectors.

However, here is my problem. Today my status points balance went back to 0, and I remain as a silver member. (My membership renewal is apparently Nov 30). Last night I phoned Qantas but wasn't able to speak to FF department as it was too late. I got put through to the general call centre, and explained that this was about to happen, and was there anything I could do? Particularly as I had already booked and paid for 2 flights to get me back to TSV on Monday (these flights would have pushed me over the 700 mark easily).

The lady at the call center was very sympathetic of my situation, and suggested that I speak with FF on Monday. She said it has been known that under similar circumstances Qantas may well put me up to Gold (because of the 10 points; the loyalty and imminent future flights paid for).

Any thoughts please? I'd be gutted to have to start all over again. :(

Welcome to the forum.

The are reports of maintaining status if just below the SC number, due to QF generosity, but none I know of being bumped up to get status. Average SC - status over a long time may influence the QF re-qualification generosity.

100's of people want that the status level to 690, 680, 670 , 660, .... instead of 700.
The SC qualification number is published.

Thanks for your welcome and your response. I did do an intro before I posted here so as not to appear rude!.

Totally understand about published rules. They are important in life. But sometimes there can be extenuating circumstances.

I wasn't even aware of the "700" SC proviso to go up to Gold until a month or so ago as I've been away from travelling for so long. When I saw that I was reasonably close I got fairly excited, and as it happened, I ended up doing some business trips - plus a trip to the cricket in Perth - and thought that would get me there.

As I now understand it (and I accept this as my naivety), the return flights that I have booked and paid for last week (prior to Nov 30) do not count until I have actually flown them. This is despite them being non-refundable fares and Qantas having my money already.

So that's what I'm going to put to them, and hope that a sense of fairplay may come into it (for the sake of 10 points). I'll let you know how I get on.

As you have not flown much on QF in the last few years your chances of gold are very low in my opinion.
100's of people think they have personal "extenuating circumstances".
10's of thousand's of people have QF gold status.
Still worth asking,

The cricket should be good over the next 2 days

Edit
Gold get QF club access which has a known $ value

On another angle, are you sure all your flights have credited?? Perhaps one is missing?

Just a thought..

I got a 10 point "credit" to get to Silver so they can do exceptions.
Having more bookings may help, I had an internetional flight booked in my case.
You need to talk to FF dept.

Were you subject to the double-status credit offer by chance? The doubles appear to be posting about 5 days after flying. I still (rather-oddly since I've been SG for a while) feel some animosity toward Q because 5 years ago they wouldn't push me to Silver when I was at 270 SC for the first time ever. Goes to show there is a lot of goodwill in being generous (also goes to show pax like me need to get over themselves!)

I hope you get there and I certainly think you deserve to.

270 is 90% of the required 300.
People who deserve status are those who 100% earn it. Rules are published.
Just ask people in a crowded QF club
There are many who think the SC's should be 270, 670, 1170 etc just for them

I am of the view that the rules are the rules. Qantas has some simple tools for calculating what you earn on each flight.
If you have received any of the 690 SCs by virtue of double SC promotions, I would be inclined to say no.

If they are all single earn, maybe a one-off 10SC bonus

I had a friend who was 10 short like you, phoned up and pleaded his case to see if he could get bumped to gold. I told him not to bother trying as I didn't think there was any hope on earth of them doing it for him, but in the end they did let him have his gold status. I remarked that this was highly irregular.

My feeling would be that it's probably not going to happen, but you'd have nothing to lose by calling up and asking the question. Good luck! :)

Good luck, being 10SC short is a real pain... you never know, and once you have it you'll want to keep it so they've at least got 600 the following year from you, they know that ;)

If you live on the Gold Coast it may be easier as I went from Bronze to Gold by asking. Although 6 weeks after being compted I have already qualified for gold and will make WP before the end of the year.

Sorry you have no sympathy from me.
Rules are rules, you know the way the system works otherwise you wouldnt have worked so hard to try and make it to gold. I've reached WP with both QF & VA, I personally fund my own travel. I was 20 SC's short of WP this year so I did a status run to make sure I kept my WP status.

Fly more with QF in the next 12months and then you might earn the right to be gold.

I'm not looking for sympathy (or an argument) - I came on here to explain my situation, and ask for experienced members suggestions. :)

I didn't know exactly how the system works; that was my point. The last time I was an active FF was over 20 years ago. When I found out recently that I was close to getting gold status, I did plan this last trip - Townsville to Perth via Melbourne; and then back home tomorrow night via Brisbane.

My first mistake was miscalculating SC's that I would earn on each sector (because of the class of flight). My second mistake was thinking that because I had paid for all sectors before the Nov 30 date, I would get my SC's, and get gold by at least 30 points.

I've now had a sharp learning curve!

So I'll explain that to Qantas, and see what they will do. I can only try. I'm certainly not trying to rort the system.

Thanks everyone for all your comments.

It is QFs decision to grant or not grant the 10 SC exemption. It is not up to other FFs.
That is correct however the OP posted here to ask for people's inputs and opinions and that is what they are offering:!:

You never know. They are giving away so many double sc opportunities that obviously they are trying to help get members up status levels as they see it as a benefit to QF since they expect you will try and keep the status i.e. spend. Expect nothing but ask anyway a one off 10 sc grant just might be granted especially if they can see you have significantly increased your spend in the recent past i.e. 3-4 months and that in say a 6 month period spanning you anniversary date you would have qualified if it was in the middle of your year and you just might have a chance.

Let us know the outcome.

I have not heard it on the forum that someone gets close gets comped up.

Good luck tho and hope you are the exception.
