Just seen in the Melbourne Q domestic lounge. . . A lady stocking up with a handfull of those little jars of jam, into the handbag.:oops:

Why bother . . . there must be the equivalent of about $0.20 of jam per jar

Don't stare at me. You might see me taking Vegemite and margarine when I'm travelling overseas if I have not forgotten. And the cost to Qantas could be 1c-2c per sachet. Im sure they'll survive.

Margarine? Little messy surely … I would be worried my luggage contents would end up smeared in grease.. vegemite I understand as can be hard to find and a little goes a long way

Me too, it's completely logical to stock up. I used to be a bit of a tea-bagger bagger too. Madame Flavour (from VA) or TWG. You don't want to get stuck with Liptons!

I always carry a few sandwich/snack size zip lock bags, so I can stash any goodies that fall my way in my hand luggage and not risk a blow-out. MrsK always shakes her head, but then enjoys the special tea bags I collect when we're at our locations.
 
I was at HKG AP once and en route to The Wing (F), specifically went into the QF lounge to get some Vegemite.
It was well after breakfast so I asked the staff for some. Apparently it's a fairly common request.
 
If you like Vegemite then just wait until you try Marmite.

I think most people who have tried Vegemite and Marmite would agree that Marmite is clearly superior both in flavour and consistency as it is not watered down!

I've had Marmite when in England. It was a disgusting pale imitation of Vegemite. Never again.

Hardly a pale imitation. Vegemite is the one that lacks any real flavour. Just an emulsion of salt as far as I can tell. And Marmite predates Vegemite by 20 years, so if one of them is a pale imitation...

Me also - in a way, I look at the bigger picture.
When we go on interstate holiday, my kids like their jam sandwiches, so there is no point in buying whole jars of margarines, vegemite, jams, etc. they will just go to waste, as we would only be using a fraction of the contents.
 
I've tried Marmite, Promite and Vegemite and I prefer Vegemite. Marmite and Promite have less umami because of the added sugar.

But I don't feel the need to travel with it nor take samples from any lounge.

And after reading about the disgusting things some travellers do with tea kettles I would never use one in room, not that I am a tea drinker; prefer to go to a cafe for a real barista made coffee.

I have taken wrapped cookies (usually the free timtams from the plane) for a snack on onwards journies where the food offerings are unclear.

It's all about what we grow up with and so on I guess. I'm a Vegemite guy and dislike Marmite, but hey each to their own. It's a bit like Americans and PB&J. They adore it. I think gross. eh.

last week leaving DFW, having vegemite toast was a delicious taste of home on QF :D

as long as everyone's happy with their spread(s) then it doesn't matter imo.

My one and only encounter with the Vibrio family was as a young registrar in ICU when a Nepalese fellow was brought in after a near drowning. He didn't get better so we go some samples from his lungs and surprisingly it grew Vibrio Cholera. While Cholera is endemic in Nepal, why would the young fellow get Cholera in his lungs?. We speculated that he got it by inhaling Bondi seawater. However DOO was already built at the time..so potentially it was already in his system...

BTW does anyone remember the POO marches?

Agree without a doubt. It has more flavour. I used to mix a teaspoon of it + honey in warm cup of water and drink it after school. 🤩

Don't get me started on the terrible UK Weetabix vs the far superior Australian Weetbix.

And yes, the Australian product is the original. There's no texture to the UK version, it's just a soggy mess! And as many Australians are taught, Never Eat Soggy Weetbix.
 
Let me just say this ... when I first arrived in AU, I mistook Vegemite for Nutella. I usually smear two table spoonsful of Nutella on each slice of toast ... I will leave it at that ... I'm sure you can imagine what would have happened next 🤣

you weren't the first, and won't be the last unfortunately.

I remember an American friend who I suggested try it but before I could suggest just s scrape for a newbie (I last the stuff on myself) they treated it like peanut butter and.. well.. the faces pulled and reaction was quite a sight. Suffice to say - not a fan lol.

It's one of those things, like Marmite in the UK and wherever else that we grow up with. I can go nuts with vegemite (like many aussies) that would leave some aghast.. but it's what we're used to and like; but I'd never, EVER, suggest a newbie to it put anything but the smallest amount on bread/toast to try.

Just a few weeks ago I was in the US and had some folks asking me about it and even I admit how gross it SOUNDS when even trying to describe it - "uh well.. it's kinda black like tar, and tastes very salty and uh.. it's a yeast extract..." and they're like I'm talking about food from Mars. I get it!

the notion of those picked herrings and the like that the Scandis like make me cringe (with no offence intended to our Northern european friends) - but that's their Vegemite if you will. A cultural thing.
