Kangaroo Island ferry - any discounts out there?

Thanks - searched the online copy and found a 25% discount - that's a decent bit of dough considering how overpriced it is. Still more than double what I'd like to pay but that's not going to happen! Mind you reading between the lines the discount is off the passengers and not the car. Will see.

I can't see how to buy it online though. It looks like you have to visit the charity's website.

We've arranged our travel to SA for the Sept-Oct school hols and already booked accommodation for Kangaroo Island staying three nights. It was only when I looked at booking the car ferry from Cape Jarvis to Penneshaw that I thought about cancelling the visit! Absolutely obscenely expensive.

Agreed. Their price is outrageous and always has been. It's just a car ferry and no luxury liner. Sometimes accommodation offers a better joint deal.

We call KI Dead Kangaroo Island. So much road kill which is why car hire companies don't like it. That and bad dirt roads in parts, made from pebbles.

We just spent a glorious week during last school hols there and it was sensational. Food dining was coughpy so we cooked at our stay.
The ferry was ok and paid 460 return for our car but it gave us 2 adults and 2 kids and a dog as well, so we thort it was not to bad. Andolutely no discounts as no competition so they can charge whatever and locals dont even get discounts. Very well organized loading/unloading at both ends.
We found everything there pricey but remember its an island but be prepared for fuel costs... It's robbery, little cheaper at Kimgscote so if there fill up there compared to Pennishore.
Hope this helps

Thanks again to everyone for their feedback and help.

I was wondering if anyone from SA had an "Entertainment Book". We used to buy these through the kids' primary school and would go out of our way to use as many coupons as possible - movies and tourist attractions anyway - not fine dining!

The Sealink site mentions the Book so I was wondering if anyone had a book to check at present. If it is in there I'd be happy to buy a book as there would probably be a few things we could use on the holiday. They are usually around $50 or so but if you are doing tourist things you make that back pretty quickly.

Entertainment Book - your local dining and activity guide

I have one and not likely to use the voucher so it is yours if you want it.

Hi, Love this board, very informative. I'm taking my family of 6 for our dream trip to Australia including Kangaroo Island in November. They ferry prices are really astounding for our group but I remember visiting KI a decade ago and always wanted to share the experience.

Does anyone know any discount? I tried to order the Entertainment Book but can't get it shipped to my USA address.

If you have any suggestions or even an extra discount card, I would be very grateful.

If you book online for travel between 1 September and some time in November kids travel free which is a significant saving. It actually works out cheaper than the Entertainment book discount we discovered. Check out the Sealink site and put your dates in to see.

(If the discount isn't current for your travel dates I can 'pay' the coupon forward).

You know once a thread gets shifted to "Destination Guide" it's as good as dead.

(don't want to sound like a smart alec but it seems to happen that moved threads get no more posts once here)

Hi Warks,

Thanks so much for your reply and suggestion. Didn't know the "Destination Guide" listing makes the thread defunct - I am very lucky you read my post!

Unfortunately, we are all adults so we don't qualify for the discount. With six adults and a car, the roundtrip fare is $744, which is quite costly for me as I am taking my parents. Kangaroo Island is on their bucket list. :)

If you have a coupon that we could use, I would be incredibly grateful!

I too have the Adelaide Entertainment book and happy to give someone the voucher for Sealink - it's 25% of the regular ferry for 4 people

I've been there a few times - last time in December 2012- KI is beautiful but be very careful driving at dusk because of the kangaroos - generally found the food at cafes and restaurants pretty ordinary - I think Penneshaw is the best place to eat and I've heard there is a place in Parndana that is OK. Generally groceries will be a bit dearer and not a lot of good fresh fruit and veg so if you are self catering (which I'd recommend) then stock up before you go.

If anyone wants any more info let me know.

Hi VPS,

I would be very happy to have your Sealink voucher. That would be a deal-maker for us to go to KI and I would really appreciate it! Not sure if I can PM you as my count is not high enough. Will try to figure how to reach you or perhaps you can PM me?

Thanks so much!

Having judt spent the best part of 6 weeks working on the island my advice is this.
1. Take plenty of money its around 20 to 30 % dearer due to the aforementioned ferry/ freight costs.
2. Its all about wildlife and scenery so dont go for the night life!

Yes to both of these. Also don't expect really good customer service. Nor gourmet food. It's adequate, and expensive, that's all. But the wildlife and beaches, ESP Vivonne Bay, are fantastic.
