My son who has just turned 16 will be flying from Perth to Chicago with Air New Zealand - he has a 10 hour layover in Auckland with outgoing travel time of around 33 hours. Is there a pass available for the Koru Club. My other option is to book a day room at a motel however he then needs to leave and return to the airport - if I need to do this are there any suggestions on good hotels that are used to dealing with vague and somewhat disorganised teenagers. I have read about Koru Club guest passes and providing the guest does not need to be with a member. Dates he will be transiting Auckland are July 3 and July19
thanks
Angela

16 will be too young to get a hotel room, or even clear customs alone without relatives waiting for him.

Only option for him is to stay in transit, Club sounds like the best idea for him...if they let in 16 year olds unaccompanied?

55 NZD for a day pass, if there is room.

That being said, minors aren't allowed in without adult supervision, IIRC.

Can you still pay $55 for a guest pass for Koru ?

I am traveling with a few mates, and can guest 1 in for free, but the other will need to pay so curious if I'll have to be nice (polite to my mates) and stay out of the lounge or just pay for one of them to join me inside

I believe passes can still be purchased however, to be on the safe side I suggest you call Air New Zealand and ask them. I had a hiccup as I was told payment by ANZ that payment for pass was cash only. It turned out it was credit card only.

Good Luck

I'm a little surprised that 16 year olds are not allowed to stay in hotels or clear customs unaccompanied (or without people waiting for them)?

Novotel Auckland Airport has day rooms (though a tad pricey for July 2012 IMHO) available and for not much more, overnight rooms. It is about 50 metres walk fom the International terminal in AKL and IMHO would be a far more preferable option to the KC for a 10 hour layover. There is other accommmodation off-airport with shuttle buses, but Novotel is pretty convenient. Food and drink at the hotel probably not so cheap, but there is a supermarket that I think is within the aiport boundaries (or very close if it isn't) - seems like a not very long walk, but then I've always been in a vehicle so may lack some perspective there.
