Kowloon or Hong Kong Island

Another vote for Kowloon for me. Especially base at Tsim Sha Tsui so you can have full HK Island Skyline view. It is unbeatable.

If budget allows, pick Intercontinental Hong Kong with full harbour view. It is the best.

I'll add my vote to Kowloon. Always love the easy access to markets, the Kowloon Park etc. Staying at the Peninsula this time around (June).

I prefer staying on the island myself. It would depend on what you plan to do while in Hong Kong but at the end of the day as long as you are close to an MTR stop it really is so quick and easy to get around that it doesn't matter that much.

The MTR is great but to cross between Kowloon and the Island I still prefer the star ferry.

I vote for Kowloon also.
We always stay the Langham place....now known as Cordis hotel.
The club level is fantastic, and totally makes your stay memorable.
As others have said the MTR gets you wherever you need to go, and Star Ferry over to Hong Kong Island is easy and fun

TQ

Used to be an island guy, now Kowloon. But not a great fan of TST. Rather too touristy for me. The nice thing about Kowloon is you can dial your own grunge level by distance from TST. The further up Nathan Road you go, the fewer tailor touts.
Also a fan of the bus from the airport. Slow but great views from upstairs. I hate the way you can't see anything from the airport train crossing Tsing Ma bridge.
Re OP query about waterfront walks, yes there's a pleasant and very popular walk from Star ferry East to Hung Hom near the coliseum. Not sure what others there are.
Cheers skip

Always stay in Kowloon as it's much more interesting. Pick a Hotel close to the MTR and you have all bases covered

Look at Club floors free food and booze much of the time, fast check in/out.

Get a train from airport if your hotel has no shuttle and a MTR transport pass is a must, hand it in on departure at down town airport checkin to get whats left back!. cabs too are dirt cheap in HKG, but have a map or hotel address with you as some drivers can be a bit short on english speak.

Mrs Lime and self will be in HKG 11/4 to 17/4.

Been to Honkers on three occasions in last ten years and always stay in TST area, the Sheraton.. Book a harbour view room. Brilliant and good price. Close to transport and tourist attractions if that is what you desire..

You really can't go wrong no matter where you stay so long as it's near the MTR. Mix it up and switch hotels every day to taste all of HK. Western hotels are generally $$$, especially around kowloon/tst/central. You can't mess up the hotel if it's 4 stars or more and in a central location

I kinda want to this but don't want to constantly be moving my stuff. What have you found the best way to manage this where you changing hotels a lot?

I really don't think that is necessary, you'd be wasting a lot of time. Just do a bit of research to figure out which side suits you best, and stay near an MTR. There, all fixed.

Edit: you could just assume that half of what you will do is on one side, and half is on the other side. You realise that the harbour is only a few minutes across don't you ... ?

Thank you for replies, I thought there would be a split camp but most responses have been Kowloon, however I appreciate the MTR advice. I will continue the research and come up with a short list for the trip matrix, the planning, which is half the fun (provided it works) will continue. :)

The Japan research begins, at least I have a good base on this forum to kick it off.

On the plus side it's on HK Island! (what's this Kowloon place?? :))

On the negative - it's miles away from anywhere. I went there for dinner once - was quite aways away.

Thank you MEL_Traveller. My daughter will be there for a conference in several weeks. I gather the intention is to keep everyone away from LKF!
