KrisFlyer redemption rates increasing [from 5/7/22]

Was hoping for lightning to strike twice but missed by one day...

Looked to book 2 SYD MUC F returns an hour ago for May/June 2023 - only waitlisting available and planes shown for many flights were B777-300ER yet in Dec to Feb they are listed as A380s.

So, decided to slum and look for business award seats on exact (desired) dates & got 1 return at lowest cost and the 2nd at low one way & advantage back. Played around some more and found so many 'cheap' business seats from Syd to Eur (leaving mid May, return Mid June) available still.'


Looking at seat maps - there are very few business seats sold from Singapore through to various European destinations in May, and neither for reverse direction in June.

So it's not too late to spend some KFF miles before the devaluation for early European summer 2023.

I know it's not KFF, but this has prompted to me use some Velocity points on an SQ business class award (just in case).

Just booked SIN-LHR in J (on 777) for next May for 92,000 pts and $63.09. Pretty good value I think, and it makes Qantas awards look what they are (overpriced and unavailable). Could've booked SIN-MAN on 350, but didn't want to get there early morning.

I'm Velocity Plat (and UA Plat, so should be OK).

The suite class seats are selling like hot cakes. I was watching mine gone while waiting on the line (which was probably < 3mins; Looking at you Qantas -_-#).

Almost felt like SQ was monitoring me and told the operator not to let me have that cake.

Yes SQ changed before midnight Singapore time which I found surprising, though I did note that departures from the USA which I am monitoring for when I book in a month or so, still were at the old rates.

I was not actually looking to book, but as I was online at the time I had a look out of curiousity.

Over the weekend I managed to book SYD-SIN-CPT in J for Easter next year.

When I went to book I remembered having read the redemption rates were going up and had it in my mind that it had already happened. The trip hadn't been on the radar at all up until now and so I hadn't paid much thought to it, particularly as I was just transferring AMEX points and thus didn't have an existing stash I needed to burn.

An unexpected surprise to realise afterwards that I'd just snuck in under the wire. Redemption rates from East Coast to South Africa up 15% now. Still arguably relatively good value compared to some redemptions on the chart, but still costlier. I got lucky, though downside of course is that any changes would now require more miles. I had to book a day earlier than I wanted and the initial layover in Singapore is quite tight, so I'd hoped to play around if/as availability changes. Suppose not now.

(That said, in related news that will surprise precisely no one, Qantas of course showed zero availability for its entire SYD-JNB and even PER-JNB for what appeared to be the entire schedule. Beggars can't be choosers.)

I booked J SYD-SIN-MUC for 4 for late June next year just before the devaluation. This morning I checked if I can move the dates of the flight on Saver award, even if I keep the same flight numbers. The system asked for an additional 58K to change the date (ie the difference between old and new rates). So it looks like any changes to the ticket will incur additional miles based on the new table.

Just called to change a date - all other details are the same. They are insisting I pay the additional miles and will not engage with me saying that their notification said date changes would not result in recalculation.

You could always quote them this from their own FAQs attached to the media release:

If I make changes to my ticketed redemption booking on or after 5 July 2022, which mileage level will apply?

Changes to flight date on or after 5 July 2022 will not require additional miles.

For example, a member has an Economy Saver redemption ticket issued before 5 July 2022 from Singapore to Bangkok for travel on 1 September 2022.

Member may change his flight date to 15 September 2022 after 5 July 2022 without paying additional miles*, provided award type and itinerary remains unchanged.

Other changes made to the itinerary on or after 5 July 2022 will be calculated based on the revised award levels.

For example, a member has an Economy Saver redemption ticket issued before 5 July 2022 from Singapore to London for travel on 1 September 2022.

After 5 July 2022, member would like to change his routing from Singapore to Paris. The miles required for the change in routing will be calculated based on the revised award levels.

*Additional service fee of USD 25 of 2,500 KrisFlyer miles will apply for selected services rendered offline by an Singapore Airlines office or reservations hotline.

Looks like they are showing the new updated miles 58,500 but when I click change, it's free of charge and it automatically adjusted to the old rates/miles.

I booked 53,000 miles for 2 people which equal to 106,000 miles.

I did - and she just read from a script that said from 5 July, the Krisflyer redemption rates had changed... She refused to engage at all.

I will call again, but until I hear of anyone who has got a change without repricing I will believe this is now their policy.

Called back - 20 minutes into the phone call I finally got the agent to the correct web page, but she is now saying that there is a 2,500 mile change fee because I am not doing it online (coincidentally this is the difference in miles that we are arguing over...). I have said this is not payable because I can't do the change online. She is checking with a higher authority and I am back on hold.

As noted in my post number 51 above, the FAQs include this statement:
*Additional service fee of USD 25 of 2,500 KrisFlyer miles will apply for selected services rendered offline by an Singapore Airlines office or reservations hotline.

I hope you manage to convince her to waive the fee.
