I just booked HKG-KUL-MEL return on MH

The QF points calculator is telling me that I will earn 60 SC for the KUL-MEL leg but 80 SC on the HKG-KUL leg. Am I looking at the right thing?

That sounds right. QF doesn't compete with MH on SE Asia - HKG services but it does on Australia - SE Asia services so provides less Status Credits for those competing services. Despite being longer flights!

I read somewhere that its (SC earn) is now zonal. Rather than actual distance flown.
And you could have earned a lot more SC if you had flown HKG to MEL or HKG to SYD, then dom SYD to MEL with QF, and then EK with a QF flight number MEL to KUL, then no choice but MH or CX from KUL back to HKG.
Under Simpler and Fairer (edited to enter proper name of "new program"),you will earn the most SC by flying QF or a flight with a QF flight number, MH will not have this, CX probably not either. So you will earn less. Instead of 140, you could have earned 240 HKG to MEL, MEL to KUL at 120 SC each.

I am basically doing MEL-HKG but via KUL for the return leg.

The anomaly is that the 4 hours flight from HKG to KUL earns more SC than KUL-MEL which is 8 hours.

Also, instead of flying HKG-MEL, I earn a lot more SC if I do it via KUL.

I am not sure how you calculate the SCs.

The OP will earn 280 SCs for the return trip and more than likely purchased a cheap business class airfare on MH.

MEL-HKG is only 120 SCs one way in business and via SYD is an extra 40 SCs so return is only 40 SCs more that the OP will earn but will more than likely cost more on QF or CX.

I used the FF and SC count sub website at QF's website.
HKG to MEL is 120 in J, MEL to KUL is 120 in J, thats how I got 240.
Yes, OP would earn more KUL back to HKG.

Except they are not flying HKG-MEL and KUL-MEL. So 240 is wrong.

Not sure it would be economical to fly HKG-MEL-KUL and return in business.

The OP is flying HKG-MEL return and in this situation they are flying via KUL.
