KUL transit questions

Hello all

I have a mid December itinerary which involves Syd -> Kul (12pm-5pm).

The next leg was Kul -> Ist (then beyond) departing 10am the morning. I had figured this was less than the traditionally recommended 24h but still ok…

Turkish Airlines (Kul onwards) has just cancelled my 10am flight (grrrr) and the alternative is a 4am departure (!)

To me that feels super tight and risky, but friends family have suggested it’s probably ok.

To move it to a 24h buffer will cost me $1k in flight changes for the Syd -> Kul leg and a lost day of income…

My questions are
1) am I mad to do anything other than suck it up and move to a full 24h gap ?

2) with two entirely different booking numbers, is it still possible to put my bags through all the way to the final destination ? Or is that likely to end up with lost bags…

Ironically Turkish Airlines is launching SYD-KUL-IST days before your flights

I am far from an expert but on Sunday, I am doing a similar thing to you though MH to EY, on separate tickets. Arrival KUL at 8pm, departure ex KUL now at 9.45am the next day, which I just switched from the ~10pm departure - it is funny how EY allows changes free of charge when they revise flight times by ten minutes, which they did just yesterday.

To me, this is plenty of time even if it is less than 24 hours transit. There is a backup MH flight overnight in case the one I am booked on goes pear shaped and I am staying at the fairly new Ibis Styles Sepang, a quick ten minute shuttle ride from the airport. On Sunday, I can tell you whether MH lets me check in my bag for the EY sectors the next day, I will pack my carry on accordingly. Having said that, you are doing other airlines so my experience might not be worth much to you...

PS, with AIRwin's comment above, maybe TK allows you to change to the new direct flights, seeing it was them who cancelled the flight you booked originally?

If I’ve understood you correctly, you went from a 2hr transit to a ~14h transit ?

The 14h transit is close to what I originally had, but that’s now been cut down to likely less than 10h

My KUL onwards itinerary is fairly fixed, so I could only really move the Syd -KUL part to accommodate/buffer

Would be keen to hear how you go with the baggage forwarding on separate tickets…

Plenty of time. Have transited through KUL with seperate tickets many times with some being around only a 4hr transit but I do prefer it to be a bit more than that.
Just collect your bags and stay at one of the transit hotels and check in again in the morning.

Amazing thank you

Have you been able to check bags all the way through despite the separate tickets ?

Some will, some won’t but if I’m staying overnight like your itinerary I would rather collect my bags and check them in again anyway. On anything under around 4-5hrs I’d be definitely trying to get bags checked through.

I'm waiting for pushback onboard MH122 right now. They would have checked through my bag for the separate Etihad booking tomorrow morning but I'm with jase05, I'll collect the bag after landing at KLIA.

Totally unrelated but the Qantas A330s look in excellent condition compared to the one I'm on. Terrible safety video as well...

Yah, MH not my first choice either, but I think it was either them or AirAsia for direct Syd-Kul options…
