Re: LAN becomes a lot bigger after TAM takeover - to leave OneWorld?

It’s interesting, I wonder which alliance gives them more. I’d hope it’s OneWorld, but maybe they’ll surprise us all and just join Skyteam :p

Definitely won't be SkyTeam. AR are joining them next year. I hope they stay with OneWorld.

If they leave OW we loose the AKL flights which I would like to take to go and visit family next year

Re: LAN becomes a lot bigger after TAM takeover - to leave OneWorld?

Surely they will b staying with OW, due to the recent 'partnership' with QF and LA?

Managed to find a report(in spanish of course) about the recent Chilean approval of the LAN TAM merger. But with Google translate-
Google Translate

Clause 6 is what we are all interested in-
6) Latam must resign within a period not exceeding 24 months from the date you accessed Operation materialize, at least one of the two global alliances, at that time involved parts, LAN and TAM.
En ningún caso podrá pertenecer a aquélla en la que también el grupo Avianca/Taca sea miembro o asociado, o se encuentre en proceso de ingresar.
In no case may belong to one in which the group also Avianca / Taca is a member or associate, or is in the process of entering

So *A is out.

The tie-up still requires Brazilian approval.

I believe the meeting to approve this will be held at the Formule 1 in Bela Horizonte.........maybe.....:-p

This report in Business Travel Asia may answer some questions

LAN of Chile and TAM of Brazil set to merge - Business Traveller Asia

The fact that the new entity will be headed by LAN's CEO answers the question.

I think that the membership of AA, Iberia, and Qantas in OW would make the Star Alliance a ridiculous choice. The three key intercontinental destinations are the USA, Spain, and Australia. LAN has an ever increasing dominance of the South American market. I will be very surprised if within 5 or 10 years LAN is not the absolute leader in South America. I suspect TAM realises this and wants to tag along.

I have been flying LAN for the last thirty years. They just get better and better. They piss all over the other Latin American airlines. (not that that is hard!) The only thing that sucks about them is there website, but cough websites seems to be a specialty in this continent.

Star seems to know the loss of tam is imminent as they have been courting other airlines in the region apparently.

And some more evidence that OW is the frontrunner-
American Airlines and LAN Ecuador Announce Codeshare Agreement - Jan 5, 2012

FORT WORTH, Texas, Jan. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- American Airlines and LAN Ecuador announced today they have received approval from the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) and Ecuadorean authorities for authorization to begin codeshare cooperation. The agreement, which will also strengthen the oneworld® alliance, will provide customers of both airlines more choices and greater connectivity when traveling between the United States and Ecuador and across each airline's global network. Sales start today and travel begins Jan. 9.
This codeshare relationship will allow American to place its code on LAN Ecuador flights, and LAN to place its code on American Airlines flights. The placement of American's code on LAN Ecuador flights will provide American's customers seamless connecting service to three new cities in Ecuador not currently served by American.

I can't see Lan leaving One World, especially with the codeshare agreement which does seem to further strengthen the bond with AA.
If Lan was to leave OW I can't imagine how they would make up for the loss of coverage to S. America.

Last year my wife and I flew from NYC-Santiago using AA miles on Lan- 40,000 miles each in coach. Talk about a bargain! The flight was selling for over $1000 US!

It probably would have worked out best if both alliances had a decent airline for getting around South America... Not sure what this means for people flying *A now... You can probably still get to most major ports in South America flying down from Europe on LH or LX or via the US on a couple of US airlines, but a bit more of a pain getting around whilst still in SA...

Star Alliance are trying to butter up Avianca. Copa is somewhat affiliated with Continental (or rather United now), and they are also being buttered in.

Nevertheless, no prizes for guessing that Star Alliance are going to go tooth-and-nail to lure LAN away from oneworld and maintain a stolid foothold in South America, even if the scene seems rather quiet on the cold Western front right now.

I can't see Lan leaving One World ...
LAN cannot merge with TAM as well as move the combine to *A - this has been mandated by both the Chilean and the Brazilian ratifications.

See post #25.

They could go to SkyTeam, but the chances of that happening are very remote - lotto odds.

Well them merging and going to Skyteam would really suck as both OW and *A would lose a lot of intra South American options and I for one don't plan to do much, if any, Skyteam flying if i can help it, certainly not as an alliance award/purcahsed ticket (maybe just cheapest flight of day options on individual airlines for getting around Europe/US etc)... Can't see the attraction for TAM/LAN either as for me Skyteam seems like a cobbled together alliance, and they would receive more traffic from the other two alliances, but maybe I am not giving Skyteam the credit they are due???

... but maybe I am not giving Skyteam the credit they are due???
Maybe yes, maybe no. I do know some quite happy *S flyers.

In the context of this thread *S has really only been mentioned in relation to being an (the only) alternative alliance. TAM is a *A newbie, LAN has been with *O for many a year.

No commercial sense could be made at all for the combine to join *S -and they can't merge then join *A.
