LOL, the comments that a QF slide is wrong are looking at it with todays route structure in mind, that will change as the 744s retire, and as QF move more routes to subsidiaries that do not have the legacy rules such as the QF sale act.

The cost of retrofitting would be outweighed by long term higher profits.

If they are currently half filling the F cabin of 14 seats, they are still selling 7 seats. Hence a cabin of 8 would be perfect in this scenario, and the economy cabin can be expanded.

check out this graphic comparing the number of seats in each class to the percentage total profit for an airline:

The problem with this chart is that is expects all available F seats are completely filled with paying F/C pax. That is not going to happen anytime soon. I see the AF chart to be a bit more realistic but the other two are far from reality. Plus it only discloses the passenger revenue but not cargo.

Reducing the capacity of F is not easy and you would think most airlines will refrain from doing so. You can get rid of F and replace it with a different cabin interior but just capacity reduction warrants a complete cabin remodel including a diverter, galley relocation (most of the time). I think the recent changes in Lufthansa F gave one example, they cut 50% of their F-Cabin on B747 in taking the window seat and remodeling it to a flat bed. Some of the reaons were that the product was stoneage and needed an URGENT improvement, customers were not willing to pay for it anymore, cabins were inflated with 'freeriders' on miles, upgrades, op-up's, friends&family of LH staff, ID passengers. So cut 50% capacity and improve the overall interior and product. Maybe paying pax are coming back as well then. The A380 now only had 8 F seats to begin with.

As far as QF is concerned, on the LAX Route at least I always had a full F cabin so far. I wonder why YVR is not a possibility for them. Maybe with a 787 in the future.

And how many of those do they have on order? Or will they just take back the JQ ones when they get the 787s?

Seems like a waste of time effort and money to me...

It has long been the plan that as the 787's arrive, the A330's will be returning to Qantas.

Keep in mind that the newer deliveries of the A330's (and likely the JQ787's) are being configured to be transferable between JQ and QF (dom).

I think too much is being read into a slide that represents something 10 years hence. The plan will likely change several times between now and then.

Well that slide is wrong even for the current fleet.

Today they operate A330 on Dom as well as Int, and 767 on Int as well as Dom, neither of which are shown. I get that they are showing the number of aircraft types, but why put if they are Dom or Int without showing it correctly? Plus JQ operate 6 A321s as well as 320s.

Don't quite see how they'll only have A380s on Int either - I doubt they'd fly them to Santiago once the 747s are retired. Seems more like a route for the 787. They had also mentioned previously the possibility of the 787 flying to DFW. And what about the other 767 and Int A330 routes they still service (Manila, Honolulu, Tokyo, Jakarta etc)? Axe the routes altogether? Replace with JQ? Certainly wouldn't be A380s!

But if they are flying 787 beyond Oz I would certainly expect skybeds. I doubt they'd go all economy/PE!

With the domestic competition heating up they're possibly even likely to put skybeds in the trans-con 787s (*if they get them for that purpose). If they're using skybed fitted 747 and 330s now for that I'd say it will continue - maybe with a redesigned seat to take up less space.

They'll have plenty of the Skybed MkI lying around that they could use to upgrade DOM J if needed.

(I'm assuming that QF aren't junking the ones they pull out of the 747's)

Excuse my ignorance but is there much of a difference between QF Business and QF First on the QF A380?

Do QF only have one type of F or do they offer Suites like SQ? Never been on a QF A380, or any QF International flight for that matter.
