It was the perfect last minute trip, BA Reward Flight Saver was a great use of Avios for what were otherwise expensive cash fares and allowed a route into SOF and out of DBV. I think the next time my folks are over this way, I'll send them off on a similar jaunt.

Great photos & very informative. You looked to have had a great time.

The quality of the roads and the look of the towns seem somewhat different from our visit - 1976 driving across Yugoslavia to/from Greece.:)

Thanks! It really felt like the romance was back in travel, I think the combination of being very last minute and just going for it rather than planning everything to the Nth degree helped on that front too.

Thanks for the TR Flashback. It's not a part of the world I know much about so it was good to read your report and checkout the the photos.

I must admit I had never really given it much thought, but I'm glad I did - amazing part of the world and in May at least, very cheap even when doing last minute :)

Crossing the border into Croatia was the longest crossing we had, given there's no easy direct flights to Montenegro from London a lot of people seem to do a day trip from Dubrovnik as it's about 1.5-2 hours drive each way. As we were crossing the border late afternoon I think we hit a lot of the daytrippers heading back across. There were quite a few tour busses lined up too, all up it took around 45 minutes to exit Montenegro and then enter Croatia.

It was good to be back in the EU though as I could turn data roaming back on and be reconnected to the world! We drove through the countryside and made our way to our accommodation for the evening, we were staying a bit out of town but were only just down the road from the marina where a lot of the boats dock that do the sail Croatia type trips.

We considered driving into town, but in the end decided on Uber. That worked out to be a much better option as parking prices there make your eyes bleed! It's not cheap and I think I've paid much less for parking even in central London. Dubrovnik is definitely riding off the back of Game of Thrones and is pricing itself accordingly.

We had a short wander around the old town, inside the city walls and soaked up the atmosphere before having dinner knowing that we'd be back the next day to do some more serious sightseeing.

Ah, Croatia isn’t part of the EU ;). That border crossing is a nightmare. Just a sliver crosses the coast and they planned to build a bridge to avoid changing countries.

You sure? ;)
Countries - European Union - European Commission
EU said:
The Union reached its current size of 28 member countries with the accession of Croatia on 1 July 2013.

Indeed, I believe to get to the rest of Croatia you actually have to cross through Bosnia & Herzegovina!

Okey dokey. My bad. I thought they were still waiting approval. Weird they don’t use Euro too. Google tells me that’s what they are waiting approval for.

England is part of the EU and doesn't use the Euro, so probably just a red herring ;)

About 10 years ago we drove from Medjugorje to Dubrovnik to catch a flight and were held up in a queue at the Croatia border for 100 minutes. What should have been three hour trip at most became nearly five.

Made the flight, checking in 35 minutes before departure.

Croatia wants to use it but it’s taking a long. Probably get approved and by then who knows what the EU will look like.
