Hi all,

am I interpreting the cancellation rules for classic reward flights correctly and that I can cancel my flight up to the time and date of departure?

For Classic Flight Rewards, you can cancel your booking and request a refund of points redeemed prior to commencing travel however a Cancellation Refund Fee applies.

I currently have 2 bookings (NRT-BNE-CNS) and (HND-SYD-CNS) for the same date. I'm not 100% sure I'll be able to catch the flight from NRT due to arriving on a separate ticket into HND and tight connection times.

Could I just wait until the day cancel either flight until the time of departure? I'm aware of the 6k point fee.

Thanks!

Yes according to the T&C you can cancel at any time prior to commencement of travel.

I guess in reality you have to be able to reach QF on the phone to cancel the booking (so WP and above would need 5-10 minutes, while NB to SG would need 1 to 8 hours :p ).

Cant you cancel online? Or is that not an option for rewards bookings?

Last year a close friend ended up in the hospital the day before a planned trip, she sms'd me her details and I logged on and cancelled her flight via Qantas website. Acknowledgement of the cancellation was immediate although it took a week or two for the $ to appear back on her credit card.

Yes, that's the simplest way, but sometimes the cancel button is greyed out (too many flight changes or just some IT issues)

I once cancelled around 2 or 3 hours before (scheduled) departure.
I did feel a bit guilty as it was an EK flight and I'd already taken the chauffeur drive to the airport.

Thanks all.

I never managed to cancel online.

Wait. What ?

Is that like the guy who kept cancelling his first class flight and rebooking the next day while in the first class lounge ??
Chinese man bought a first class ticket which came with access to a VIP lounge that had free food. He rescheduled over 300 times in a year to enjoy over 300 free meals. When investigated, he canceled the ticket and got a full refund. (x-post r/TIL) : China

It used to be that cancelling an award online would generate a $ voucher at a ridiculous exchange rate rather than returning the points. Not sure if that's still the case.

Not really.
I could see the incoming EK flight was running very late, which would have messed up my next day, so I booked the same route (BKK-SYD) with TG using UA miles.
Over the years I've used probably fewer than half the chauffeur drives I might have, so I'm not beating myself up too much over it.

I cancelled my daughter's award booking in the last hour before before departure. The surcharges were refunded almost almost immediately but no sign of points for 3+ months.

Called the other day and the consultant could not confirm I'd actually cancelled. Put me on hold and checked with supervisor and came back saying they had to create new booking to refund the 6,000 points that were due to be refunded. Points in account now.

What is this “new booking to refund the points” thing. We were told the same thing a couple of weeks ago. All that ended up happening with us is that points stayed removed plus I lost a whole lot more. Another two phone calls before that got sorted.

I suspect the consultant did not cancel my booking as requested or some glitch in system. He told me he had to create new booking to refund the points. Make of that what you will.

And that’s exactly what they told me. Maybe it was the same guy! Whatever he did, didnt work and Qantas didn’t even charge me the penalty as a result.

Mine has had 12,000 QFF points added back then 6,000 QFF points deducted.

Try calling again.

I did. Called twice afterwards. Both consultants had no idea why he’d made another booking.

Cancelled a reward a few days ago by text chat. Due to a time table change, I now have it in writing that they will not charge me the penalty.

so i can't seem to find any T&Cs which actually spells out the cancellation charges for an award booking with a partner airline.

I'm looking at flights which are ~$200 in taxes per person. so this will be fully refunded?
and there will be some points penalty i take it for cancelling? perhaps 5-6k QFF per person?
