Does anyone know about how CX releases award seats close to departure? What pattern does it tend to follow and how close do departure do they tend to open up?

I recently managed to snag a CX J fare within around 36 hours prior to departure (local time). There was also no QF J available on the same segment!

Family members had the same experience recently (MEL-BNE-HKG rebooked onto MEL-HKG). Bonus was it cost less points and was done gratis due to an issue with ticketing the original booking!
