Rumour - A330-200s for SYD-HNL

Heading explains it all.. speculation suggests further 763s will be converted from the International Dreamtime configuration to the Domestic Millennium config, with the 767-300s from SYD-HNL being reallocated to domestic duties and A330-200s taking over on SYD-HNL duties.

Still haven't heard from the OP on where this rumour comes from. Would like to know the veracity of it.

Rumour - A330-200s for SYD-HNL

Qantas return to NGO

I think NGO would stick with JQ....

As for 743's on MEL-LAX it seems strange considering they are using 747-400's on the odd SYD-PER and I thought they would have spare 744 capacity once the A380's arrive... or at least keep the 332 on the route...

As for SYD-HNL.... I will believe it when I see it - i still think this will be downgraded to JQ once they have more aircraft....

My observation is that the 744's are on SYD-PER usually on a specific pair of flights on Thursdays. If this is indeed the pattern, then maybe there is only enough slack for a transcon rather than getting to LAX and back.

The OP's "rumour" is consistent with some gossip I had heard, here is what I posted back in March.

"As some of you know I am a frequent traveler to HNL and I have just been given some interesting information by a mate who is in the travel industry in Hawaii. One could only call it rumour at this time but the story is as follows:

QF is not happy with the loads JQ are achieving on the SYD-HNL route and it has not been running at a profit. Either late 2008 or more likely early 2009 JQ will dump the route. QF will increase services to at least 5 flights per week, with the possibility of daily using QF A330 aircraft or even the possibility of 2 class 744's. I don't know the operational truth on this but i am told that the route can essentially be serviced by a single aircraft for the daily return, which seems to make sense.

If true, an interesting rumour...and...if true, most welcome."

My question is , where does his info come from? Mine was from someone in Hawaii who has a business interest in Australia-Hawaii tourism so keeps his ear to the ground on all developments. Time will tell but the "rumour" if you will excuse the use of that word again is that with JQ's shortage of aircraft their focus is more into Asia, the HNL experiment is not overly successful for JQ and the route will stay with QF mainline for a number of other reasons as well.

Interestingly if QF were to drop the route (which I doubt) it would be the first time in 50+ years that no full service or premium airline has serviced this route. (I don't count HA as full service or premium carrier!) Gone are CP, AC, PA, UA, CO, AA...I think that's it?

Why no love for HA? Maybe I've been in the US too long, but earlier this year, I paid a little over $200 to fly HNL-SJC in Y. Got a nice meal and decent drinks included (no grog obv.) in a well used, but clean 767. Certainly better than any flight I've had on AA, US or DL. If the flight to Aust was equivalent (though twice as long :), then I'd put them on a par with QF in 767. Maybe up front they don't rate?

Loss of major carriers on the route is purely a function of aircraft flying distances. When SYD-LAX became viable, HNL went backwards.

Similarly if SYD-LHR ever becomes viable, ce la vie to BKK, SIN

I like Hawaiian and use them inter-island regularly, but, yep, it's upfront that counts for me and HA "first class" is a joke. The food and service are ok but the seat and IFE are not international longhaul standard, just a regular domestic config. I heard that they are now giving out portable dig-e players to F passengers. As to the Y cabin if QF brought in the A332 with its AVOD system to HNL and kept the pricing in Y where it is now, why would anyone fly HA?

I Looked on the QF booking engine and could'nt find any 744 flights on any Thursdays. I know that QF have used them when the 743's have been out of action for an extended period.

They are timetables as 743's, although the midday flight (577?) seems to be a 744 on Thursdays. Would need someone with access to actual stats to confirm (or deny!)

Hi, does anyone have any update on the veracity of this rumour? I have just booked award flights for the family SYD-HNL next June/July (with QF not JQ) and would be very happy if the flights were on either A330 or 744.

IF JQ give up SYD-HNL in favour of increased QF capacity, it raises the question of what would happen to those folk with paid JQ tickets - would they get refunds or shifted to QF!!! Imagine if a JQ Starclass passenger ended up in QF J :D

Would be nice to get a skybed instead of the Jet* W product, i would imagine this is what they would do but some others have reported more recently that the Jet* flights have been very full so who knows what will happen.

The skybed would be a bonus, but my main wish is to have the AVOD. Trying to keep 2 daughters amused for 9 hours without AVOD is going to be a real challenge.
