I'll stand up for the LA bus system. It is not like Sydney or Melbourne but I use it extensively when there, particularly Santa Monica - West Hollywood - Downtown. If they go where I want to go I'm in! And it is an eye opening experience. I have had the best conversations with helpful drivers and my fellow travellers on the buses. :)
Yep. The first time I stopped in LA, I was going from the Greyhound station (had spent a few days with a friend in the CA central valley) and was staying in Santa Monica. Found out from the staff at the station which bus I needed and where the stop was, then spent the hour on the bus talking to the driver and getting ideas for places to go and things to do. Then at the end, he told me how to get from the stop to the hostel I was staying in.

Last time I had a stop over in LA, I was staying in a hotel near union station downtown, so just got the flyaway bus to/from LAX.

Just UberX directly from the airport - there's only a $4 LAX-TAX.

When I first tried the app centred on LAX it said UberX wasn't available but going back it worked and the fare is a lot more reasonable now. Thanks :)

All the online reviews of Prime Time and some of Super Shuttle make me anxious . . . they're almost all very critical. Seems a major issue is getting to LAX; getting from mightn't be so bad.

I am LAX 3-4 times a year and always use Super Shuttle ... They have improved a great deal over the years and the pick up they send you a text the night before with a link that you can use to take to the website that shows the location of your mini van on a map ( like Uber). I normally stay in West Hollywood area and travel times have varied between 40mins to 2 hours.

As for public transport... if you like a adventure and dealing with crazy people, go for it. I don't mind getting lost in a big city and seeing how the locals do it. If you don't have a TAP card, ensure you have correct coin (1.75) for the bus.

Just one tip.... when looking at the LA subway map..... Anaheim is not where Disneyland is ( rookie error)
