LAX TBIT to T4 airside tunnel query

Travelling QF93 tomorrow. I have a checked in bag which I will have to clear at TBIT and then check in again before transferring to T4 to catch an AA domestic flight.
With the new tunnel between TBIT and T4, does this whole process remain "airside" or, because of the need to re-check my baggage, am I unable to use the tunnel?

It would be easier for you to just walk around to T4, but if you really wanted to, you could go back into TBIT and take the corridor to T4

Good question. Can you clarify: Will your bags be checked through to your US domestic destination? Even if on separate PNRs Qantas should still be checking through until their new policy kicks in later.

For flights arriving at Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) with connections out of Terminal 4
After clearing immigration and customs, the T4 Connector provides a checked baggage inspection system plus a four-lane passenger security screening checkpoint so that customers can clear security in the sterile connections area, rather than being required to exit TBIT and re-clear security at the connecting terminal. The TBIT entry to the T4 Connector is immediately to the right after Interline recheck area in TBIT.

From Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) to Terminal 4 or Terminal 6
If you're connecting to a domestic flight at T4 or T6, you'll need to clear Passport Control, collect your bag and clear customs.

If your bags are tagged to your onward destination, you'll need to recheck your bags at the Transfer Area. You can then proceed through the security screening checkpoint in the sterile connections area at TBIT and make your domestic connections without having to clear the TSA screening area at T4 or T6.

If your bags haven't been checked to your onward destination, you'll need to make your way to T4 or T6 and check them in with the airline you're flying with.

T4 and T6 are within walking distance of TBIT

It looks like my information is out of date. I last did it in April and didn't see any new door at the onward bag drop. Maybe I was just so keen to get out of TBIT that I missed a sign. I'll keep a look out next time.

I read that on the Qantas site the other day too and wondered if I've been missing something or is this a very new addition at LAX?

You will clear CBP and collect bags at TBIT when you arrive.
If the bags are tagged through to your connecting flight, there is a bag drop outside CBP.

You will then need to walk to T4 to clear TSA. If you got the AA boarding pass in MEL, you might be able to clear TSA in TBIT and walk through the connector to T4.

There will be a TSA checkpoint within the connector building, near the bag drop point and a future airside bus transfer bay, but the lower level of the connector building where these will be is not yet complete. Only the upper level passage between T4 gate 40 and TBIT beside the QF F lounge is open.

I think I would prefer to exit and walk around outside on the top level foot path open to the sky, much more pleasing after a long flight than another fluro lit passageway.

It is now possible to walk, airside, between all the terminals on that side of the airfield (TBIT, T4-7)

From a post on HFC Facebook yesterday looks like the link is about ready to open
(albeit may only be for people with carry-on, which would make it less useful)

This is reportedly just after the immigration control before you go downstairs to the baggage collection and customs.

Made it through on Saturday evening, and it does exist! When you pass out of the luggage re-check area, and before you go outside to the kerb, turn right. On the far wall there's a small sign with an arrow pointing forward for Gates 122-159 and Gates 40-49. Follow the sign and you're taken to a TSA checkpoint (on the same level, in a big open room). I was there with one other person, and we were the only 2 passengers in the entire area. There was no PreCheck per se, though we were given PreCheck lite, with shoes and belts on but laptops and liquids out. There also was nary a NOS to be seen anywhere. Once you're through security there is an escalator or lift to get you up to the airside connector. From there it's left for T4 and right for TBIT, as you'd expect. This is so much better than walking outside and back in for TBIT or outside and right for T4, but surely the empty room won't last long...
