LAX to San Diego - best option?

Hi all

I am flying to LAX and need to get to San Diego. I don't particularly want to hire a car and drive as I will be flying J on QF11, plan to indulge in the J wine list and probably won't be entirely sober at the end of it.

Any suggestions about the best way to get there and advice about car services, shuttles etc would be greatly appreciated

Hi drpil, and welcome to AFF.

It's around a 4 ~ 5 drive from LAX to SAN so I would suggest unless you can get access to a quite cheap shuttle service, my 2 suggestions would be;

1. continue your flight with AA flight LAX-SAN (flown by American Eagle; very basic but you'll be there in an hour + transfer time), or;
2. stay in LAX the day you arrive, do a bit of sight-seeing, then drive down the following day.

Drron may also be able to give you some guideance if you ask him nicely, as he has been there a number of times.

Maybe look at getting a bus to Union Station ($7 for the Flyaway bus) an then grab the Amtrak to SAN ($36) could take about 3-4hrs all up for under $50 bucks.
Havent done this before but thought it could be an idea.

Hi,

By far the best option, as mentioned by Fantic125 is to fly down with AA (American Eagle). There is a flight (AA3029)to SAN @ 11.35am. This gives you 1 hr 50mins after QF11 scheduled arrival @ 9.45am. Its slightly under the preferred 2 hrs for a connection , but is achievable. If that is missed the next flight (AA3025) is at 1.25pm of which you can just continue the wine indulge in the Admirals Club

It's actually around 2.5 hours from LAX to San Diego. Did the drive last year and in 2010.Having said that , depending on how you are after 14 hours on a plane it can be tiring .

The 1.25pm flight and keep going with the wine sounds good

I've done this before. Actually to make it worse, my start point with Perth, via SYD to LAX, rented a car and drove down. Only 2.5 hours, really easy drive on the freeway for 99.9% of the way.

The reason I drove is I was going to require a car anyway. However, I was so zonked I probably shouldn't have been driving (tired/jet lagged, not drunk). Maybe if you aren't travelling in Y it wouldn't be so bad.

Time over...I'd take the AA flight.

Likewise i had to pick something up in San diego then go the airport for Vegas.Got stuff all sleep from SYD to LAX in Y so i was pretty out of it by the time i got to San diego airport so as you say i would do it different if i had to again.You may feel ok when you pick the car up but it doesn't take long to hit you.

Sorry I am of no help.Always pick up the rental and drive.Then again I have usually had some sleep so no probs.Doing it again in November after nearly 7 hours Flounging and that may be a problem!
