Let The Music Play or NOT !

This is simply another 'enhancement'.

A similar event happened years ago with the removal of seat back screens on domestic services. Pax were annoyed but eventually behaviour changed and it seems pax have accepted (or championed) 'BYOD'.

RIP airline entertainment.

QF has never removed seatback IFE from the current fleet. The 332’s that returned from JQ were provided with iPad IFE as they never had in seat screens. Not all of the 737’s were delivered with in seat screens, hence the installation of the streamed content onto a BYO device. These 737 without the seatback IFE had the drop down screens every 3-4 rows as their entertainment.

I assume EBG/L will be provided with the Ipad treatment once they get refurbished though

You got me. How about 'never installed'?

So how is this an enhancement? These birds were delivered with the drop down screens which were the norm for domestic at the time?

Kind of suggests that your first post didn’t actually happen (I.e annoyed customers etc)

Just on this notion that IFE isn't needed because everyone always brings their own, yes I have an iPad, but unless it's a requirement for my destination I'll simply leave it at home, one less thing to carry and lose / get broken.

Also I only have 1 iPad, but 4 kids. That works fine in an airport lounge where I can set up a movie and all the kids gather around it, but not so well if we're all on the plane.

So far we've only done flights with IFE installed, but I am wondering if one day we're going to end up on a long haul looking longingly at the space where a screen was once installed.

QF provides an iPad for Y pax in the 332’s if they don’t have seatback IFE installed, but it’s BYO for the 737 fleet without seatback IFE.

On the routes such as DPS and SIN that the 737 can do, the AVOD birds have a near guaranteed monopoly on these runs.

And the IFE in the later 737s is starting to look dated.

When QF next buys shorthaul aircraft (737/320 or MOM/797), I wouldn't be surprised if they are without IFE and are BYO. Different on longhaul

  1. Travelling back from Tokyo the other evening with nothing but inane podcasts available, I belatedly realised that ALL of the podcasts are in English. Has QF forgotten about diversity?
  2. And, BTW, streaming movies often results in buffering delays when too many other Self-Boarding Cargo are also trying to do so. [Grandson – aka would-be FF – was unimpressed]
  3. Like others, I too have subsequently bought music I discovered on the New Releases screen.

Bad choice, QANTAS.

This is quite a valid point. Music is universal, English language podcasts are not.

I didn't realise it had spread to QF international. Glad my next flights are on EK and SQ.

Follow up on my email to Qantas Entertainment, complaining about the loss of audio from IFE, particularly the loss of the smile high club (is that still available on international?). The advice upthread was they they're responding quickly.

I received some soothing noises from them just over three weeks later along with the standard "always reviewing the entertainment options". Possibly they have had a lot of feedback to work through:rolleyes:, possibly the staff at the other end have been reallocated to the "vague and general reply" team.

Cheers skip

I'd forgot about this and went to listen to the radio on recent 737 flight with IFE screen and only 3 radio channels but no music and couldn't get audio anyway. :(

Music still alive and well on the Trans-Tasman A330 services.

Music still on flights both ways SYD - HKG in the past week. Definitely got some use from me

Music also available this week on my international A380 and A330 flights. Also got a lot of use from me!

Well yesterday I flew from SYD to MEL on a Boeing 737 and, as expected, no music.

I was surprised to see the exact same aircraft (VH-XZH) at the gate for my connecting MEL-AKL flight. On this flight, all the radio stations were suddenly available!

This says to me that Qantas is deliberately removing the music when aircraft are operating domestic sectors. Presumably this is to save on licensing fees?

Good sleuthing!

Yes, I think this was canvassed earlier, along with the idea that on domestic services there is (or will be) some tie-in with Apple so that's where the funding will go.
