Let's mix it up and fill in some experience gaps: RTW 2015

Dining options are, shall we say, limited in Luderitz. Tonight it's the best place in town at the Nest hotel.

The local oysters, while perfectly acceptable, were not up to the Swakopmund standard and the fish was reasonable.

Now, as many of you know, I seldom eat dessert. But, a blast from the past: crepes suzette! Let's put the slightly nervous waitress to the test!

She really tried hard and... the result was pretty darned good! She'll get a good tip!

Don't forget: we're in the middle of nowhere here and they are trying hard to be what they really aren't at the town's 'sophisticated' hotel.

I put her to the test and she passed!

I think the rail line between Keetmanskop north to Mainetal and Windhoek is in use, they have freight services to South Africa. When we were there (Jul 14) there was work on reinstating the Aus to Luderitz line. It was getting close and they were doing final surveys. It was talk of the town as it had not be in use for 20 years or so. When it was built it took 9 months, some sort of record but the kicker was it was constructed with pow labour, one man died for every 100m. They have a sand clearing team that does the roads and rail line was to become part of that. We stayed at the Nest.

Leaving the fog behind about 30km E of Luderitz.

Apart from the cludgy gearbox, the Ranger performed well. Suspension and steering is really sorted - does very well on both dirt and tarmac. 2.2L TD is reasonable once wound up. Cruises nicely up to about 140kph but starts to get a bit wheezy running up to150.

Windhoek has a rather pleasant compact downtown with a nice park on one side of the central area.

Just about done.

Now in SYD - replete with luggage - and waiting to go to PER but they've just closed the airport because of an approaching thunderstorm.

Welcome home John.

Super trip report all round! Africa is the one continent I have little experience of. Always wanted to, but now I have to after reading this. Might be time for my own RTW next year. I have Japan as a start. Now just planning the rest....:)

Thanks again!

Home again.

That completes the 12th RTW since 2005. All DONEx except for 2008 which was an AONEx in the last year of the 20-sectors xONEx's. One each year, except for two in 2006.

Now, what shall I do tomorrow (apart from going for a surf ).

Silly question! Start planning the next DONEx, of course ;):D.

Again, special thanks to Juddles, Mrs Juddles, the two lovely young Juddlettes and, of course, Rebecca for making my time in Colombia extra special :D.

Thanks for coming along for the ride, peeps!

Ah well, back to the grind in the PERadise head office today...

The running track.

I have just read this thread from A to Z, and what a great read, and really great photos.
Sometimes a photo does not bring out the best, but you have definitely brought out the best especially using a iPhone.
