LH 747-400 J ICN-FRA Painful Nostalgia?

We've booked CX J to Seoul in June and I am considering a side trip to BEG. When checking fares I've noticed the cheapest J fare (<$3.2k) is LH in their 747-400. I have a soft spot for the 747 but is this painful nostalgia? I think the upper deck is the best place to sit although 4D looks interesting. Would you do this flight? The next cheapest J fare (<$4k) is EK which changes to FZ in Dubai, so I'm leaning toward LH.

My preference would be the nose, so 4D.

The upper deck is pretty much just a 737… not a great place to spend that many hours considering the disadvantages of the seating arrangement for LH.

The solo seat may lack privacy, but you’ll have a unique ‘throne’ seat, and a spacious and quiet forward cabin.

The rest of LH’s business offering on board is reasonably good. It’s just their seating which is poor. (But somewhat mitigated here with a solo seat.)

Go for it, once the 747 type is gone you’ll wish you did. I’d go for a leg upstairs just to snap a couple of photos of the interior.
You're convincing me. I'd feel the same way I feel about missing Concorde. In the early 2000s British Airways had an around the world special for £4k including an upgrade on Concorde between LHR and JFK and I didn't think that was a wise way to spend $12k so I'd wait. So much for that.

Lufthansa also have 19 of the newer 747-8s, so they’ll be around for a while yet. The -400s are starting to show their age, but the new -8s are a really lovely aircraft. The upper deck on those is nice and new :)

I’m flying to Europe next month and have specifically chosen to fly SIN-FRA on Lufthansa for the Boeing 747.

Go for it, I say! 😁

(And LH J isn’t that bad - the seat is average but it’s still lie-flat and the service/food is good.)
