And so we arrive in Ollantaytambo, the base camp for journeys up to the Ancient City, and I am depressed.

Small point, but is the town beneath Machi Picchu Aguas Calientes?? I seem to recall Ollantaytambo was where we caught the train from to get to AC and MP, and was and hour or two away?

But yes quite a place, amazing view down from Huayna Picchu as well if you had climbed that, but not for the faint hearted...

Actually you are quite right, it is Aguas Calientes. I blame the little sleep and too much champagne......

Amazing place. My wife and I climbed Wayna Picchu (photo 8). One of the great experiences of life!

We also made it to the top.....just!! The high altitude made climbing very hard work but the view from the top back towards MP was incredible!

I didn't find the altitude quite such a problem, but then we had flown into La Paz about 4-5 days before and when i first got off the plane for a day or two i was a bit short of breath but had probably got acclimated... From there we caught a bus to Cuzco and then took the train to MP...

But the climb up Wayna Picchu was pretty steep and uneven, not good if you have vertigo, but a spectacular view for sure, MP looks like a little postage stamp below...
