Just received an email from Qantas advising that for a limited time, it is possible to upgrade our Q class seats to PE or J.

"Requesting an International Flight Upgrade Award is easy, simply register your upgrade request online at qantas.com between 12:01am AEST 26 April and 11.59pm AEST 28 April 2012 for flights departing 1 May to 30 June 2012. Flight Upgrade Awards are at all times subject to the availability of requested seats"A few questions for those in the know, we are flying SYD-JFK, JFK-LAX, LAX-SYD in a couple of months and a number of domestic internals.

I am looking at upgrading the SYD-JFK leg, a 747 out of SYD to LAX on QF107 and then I am not sure what they operate through to JFK? Does the LAX-JFK leg have PE class? Or would we likely be bumped back to Y, or alternatively bumped up to J?

Alternatively the return LAX-SYD is on QF12 and the A380 product, would our points be better spent on PE on the A380, or are they pretty much the same across the 747/A380s?

Thanks!

Just received my offer, but I had already put in a request when thoughtful AFFers pointed out a earlier seeemingly directed offer was actually a general offer. Fingers crossed.

The 'window' is open again it seems - I got the target offer "Upgrade your flight to PE" but able to request upgrade to J also on an O class fare :) :) :)

Offer expires: 18 Mar 2025

- Earn up to 100,000 bonus Qantas Points*

I spent all my points :(

On my sole international booking:

I do know one person who might be able to take advantage though so I sent him a heads up :)

When you say a couple of months, I hope you mean before 30 June.

I believe they now operate a 747 to JFK, again.

(insert general whinge about paying for upgradable fares)

Indeed it is medhead.

Departure is the 29th June, points upgrades are available for that flight. Interestingly, the return leg also has an upgrade available! LAX-SYD 20th July.

Personally I'd try to make the outbound flights as comfortable as possible, in that way you get a positive start to your vacation / trip. So go for the upgrade to J if possible. SYD-LAX will be in a 747 and then the LAX-JFK should be a A333 ... both sectors will have skyslope mark 1 seats ie angled lie flat. On the inbound flight (return flight) just make to with Y as after that long flight, you could always go home and sleep in your own bed and recuperate.

I also got an email advising of the upgrade opportunity, where I have an O class booking 02/06 SYD-SIN. A380 too. Might decline the invitiation and accept staying in Y this time, seat 80K I believe.

Personally, I'd put in the request for all flights. I'll go out on a limb here and assume that the upgrades are not confirmed until just before the flight, as is standard. In which case, IMO it is always worth having a ticket in the lottery.

Indeed! SYD-SIN in J for $350SGD and 40,000pts is well worth it :) :) :) :) :)

On a very general note I believe these possible upgrade opportunities represent some of the best value usage of FF points.

I am able to upgrade a (ADL-)SYD-SIN flight at the end of Oct too. So probably it isn't date specific at all. I paid $400 for the one way ticket in the last sale. So also happy about this. Can survive in PE on the day flight up, I'll keep to J & F though on the way back down tho ;)

I'm in same position, SYD-HKG on A380, selected 80A. 25,000 for PE and 40,000 Business. I had planned on using my complimentary F lounge invite that day so i'm not sure if full business is worth it, maybe I should just go PE?

J on the A380? I'd go for it.... :!:

I was able to request an upgrade on my Mel-Lax rtn in September off a previously ineligible fare. Fingers crossed....

60,000 pts for an upgrade to PE from Discount Economy, SYD-JFK... Seems a bit steep! Maybe I'm just a tight cough :)

I requested premium economy. I figure its probably better because it's a day time flight, i'll already have lounge access, and I haven't tried PE yet. When can I expect the upgrade to go through/or not go through?

Managed to request an upgrade on a BNE-AKL flight at the end of July. Was booked in "O" class.

Under the new improved upgrade experience they can be confirmed any time between 5 days upto 5 hours prior depending on Status level.
