Loading Dishwashers - Cutlery Handles UP or DOWN?

Funnily enough I couldn't remember which way I face the cutlery when loading the dishwasher this evening. Half are facing up, the other half down.

I put the handles down. I hand wash sharp knives.

Don't care how it's loaded as long as it's not me doing the loading as the kids have abandoned their dishes and cutlery in the kitchen sink :evil:

Handles down - the spoons and forks won't fit in the slots of the basket if you try the other way.

Knives are the exception - handles up, blades down - although in practice it matters rather little, as we are all aware to be careful when reaching in for the basket, and I haven't seen our washing come out second rate yet.

I doubt it - one is a safety issue offset against better cleaning and one is a practicality issue. (Generally, down at front = less resistance to rotation when pulled.)

Our AEG has a basket. Handles down although I did hear/read some time ago about a child falling on a knife in the dishwasher handle down. Nasty.

Handles down unless it's a sharp knife, then the sharp end goes down instead.

Dish drawer is IMHO the only option. Handles up or down seems not to matter much.
I NEVER put carving knives, or carving forks in the dishwasher. In fact I never put any chef knives in either

Knife-block knives by hand. All others horizontal (Miele)

Get a Miele and then you can lay them out nicely in the third tray on top

Indeed, takes a few extra seconds to pack but so much easier afterwards and they always get a good clean

I always go handles down so the knife blade or the tynes of the forks get a good hard wash.

Yet the main washing arm is down the bottom.................

And you get more room in the bottom tray too.

I have a Bosch with the cutlery tray too. I too thought it was a crazy idea, but the lady at the Good Guys talked me into it and said I would come to love it.

How right she was, :shock: and all that space in the bottom tray !!!
