Dunno if this is worth a thread or not, but here goes.

On QF142 AKL-SYD the other day, the crew member servicing the J cabin on B737 kept the J toilet door locked except when a J pax moved to use it. Locked again when they exited. At least once, they serviced the loo after it was used.

One Y pax early on tried to use it, found it locked and was then bounced by the crew member :)

I've never seen the locking bit before - anyone?

I'm sure most of us know how to lock / unlock the bathroom by now. I personally find all this shenanigans a bit boorish...if Im a J pax, I have no issue with an elderly pax, child or any Y pax blocked by the trolley from using the J toilet.

Seen it several times on non-QF flights! Especially the WCs on wide bodies between the J and Y cabins.

Agree… and hopefully the crew share your empathy.

Y pax blocked by cart in the aisle… not so much. Planning is the key there. Go before or after.

Yes.
Last evening on Per to Mel. Both times I went to use it he had it locked. “Those economy pax keep coming up”. The bloke (boss hosty) seemed a bit of a strange cat overall in my opinion.
There were three spare J seats too so not like it was that busy.

Loos should be available to everyone on the airplane irrespective of ticket price.

I've used the F loos on the QF A380 flying J. It's not special. A loo is a loo and the access is/should be the same as breathing air.
That’s QF. But you wouldn’t want eco pax using the EK F shower rooms with all the amenities, or SQ’s, or any other number of airlines.

This egalitarian notion would be fine if men didn’t make such a mess using the WCs. It’s simple numbers… the more men that use the WC the dirtier the floor is. That’s what you pay in F and J to avoid.

Understand. That could be a carve out because of the difference in loo type. Other than that any loos which offer basically the same amenity should be open to all.
Certainly a 737 should not have restricted loos...
Except for the volume of pax using the WC.

Pax should use the facilities in their ticketed cabin, unless they have needs that override that. (and poor landing does not meet that criteria!)

Disagree, much like premium seats offer a greater bum to seat and shoulder to backrest ratio, there is an assumed ratio of premium passengers for the toilets. It's part of the package for paying for a premium service.

I mean, why draw the line at making toilets free for all, why then not seats, why not the meals, why not the lounges?

Because they don't charge for using the loos or for that matter breathing the air. Safety is available to everyone equally
Yes, it's not the loo's you're paying for, but its the ratio of loos to passengers in the premium cabins you're paying for. Much like you're paying for more space, and more meals etc.

Just like I don’t get to walk up to a shop and feel entitled to use their toilet or carpark spot or other facilities without being their customer (a shop owner is entitled to say no to anyone, but much less likely to do so to a paying customer)

When I pay for a premium service, I expect what is reserved for my use is not just opened up to anyone, since the ratio of premium pax and FA and pilots to toilet reserved for them is part of the deal. Just because the toilet is empty doesn’t mean we let anyone else use their toilet, some might not mind, but others want to have that ratio policed so they they don’t have to wait for toilets to be empty.

Similarly i dont expect the FA to offer leftover premium meals to Y class pax, even though they are likely to be trashed at the end of the flight

How the FA and CSM in the premium end police this is up to the individuals involved, some shut the curtain to the premium area, others by locking the toilet.

Surely I would notice the FA locking the toilet door sooner or later on a flight, particularly on a single aisle domestic flight (since there is only one toilet to police and it in front of the J pax. And I doubt the FA would wonder far from the small pointy end such that you can’t find her/ him to open the locked toilet. I can also understand why locking the premium toilet, particularly if some airline policy or expectation that the premium toilet are regularly cleaned.

And since I am usually seating in the cattle class, my expectation is, when sharing with 150+ other Y pax, either go early or not at all on a golden triangle flight

By that logic anyone in Sydney T1 should be able to enter the QF F lounge and help themselves to a shower suite.

in fact anybody passing outside your house should be able to come inside and use the loo.

I was going to say the same thing but I realised Quickstatus may be one of the few who don’t mind letting strangers use the loo

I’m glad some people get the concept of society.

To answer @RooFlyer, I’ve not seen it and also believe it is a little overkill.
