This is an interesting, fact-filled article re a boarding methods trial at LGW:
www.traveller.com.au
Even if boarding occurred more quickly, any improvement might be neutralised or negated by slot restrictions at busier times, or weather, but it is surprising that airlines always on the lookout for cost savings haven't at least trialled differing boarding methods, especially given the declining domestic airline punctuality in Australia.
Let's hope in time there's a follow up article to see if anything changes as a result of this one gate trial.

Window seats first: Airport (finally) finds a better way to board planes
Given how much airlines love to trumpet their punctuality you'd expect them to try just about anything to speed up the boarding process.
