Hi all,

Got an upcoming work trip to Scandinavia, and have scheduled a few days layover in London to catch up with people. The place I used to stay at has closed down, so am chasing alternative hotel recommendations. Ideally I'd like somewhere in Central London close to a tube station (not hard, I know), preferably 4-5*. Budget is open at this stage, just chasing nice suggestions. It will only be me staying, and aside from wanting somewhere safe, admittedly I'm a sucker for places with nice bathrooms and good restaurants nearby :)

Appreciate any suggestions!

Hi DrA didn't say there myself but would next time lived the locale of Sofitel StJames, I stayed at Rubens at the Palace, but really wasn't to our taste, a bit over the top but lots do like it.

I have only been to London once (I hope to make it many more times!) so not sure how it stacks up but I really enjoyed the Crowne Plaza Blackfriars.

It is very nice inside and offered nice perks to Platinum members if you are one (free Wi-Fi for up to 2 devices). I used points so not sure how it is price wise, but I am sure it is not as expensive as others.

Directly across the road from Blackfriars tube station which has the Circle and District lines running through it.

If it matters there is also a Tesco Express on the corner adjacent to the hotel which we found handy if we required something.

I'm technically a member of most of the major hotel chains. I just don't have high enough status with any of them to bother with brand loyalty at this point. I sleep around too much (pardon the pun) :P

I was looking at the Ritz. They have a good deal going by the looks of it during my scheduled dates. I just wonder whether it's one of those hotels that is very popular, but doesn't actually live up to its reputation...Anybody stayed there recently and can comment?

Ah, fair enough.

Sounds like you are looking for something a little "better" than a Crowne Plaza anyway! :)

I quite liked Hilton Tower Bridge we got it cheap and quite cheap by London standards and it's only a couple years old and in really good nick with MASSIVE rooms compared to other hotels we stayed at throughout Europe.

Sure it wasn't 'central' but Tube station was at Max 5 mins away walking and plenty of taxis to be had and some great pubs and restaurants around the area. Tower Hill was a 10-15 min walk as well if you felt like a stroll over Tower Bridge.

I was worried about staying there but it's close to everything on the tube or taxi and it's a safe area.....walked home plenty of times in the middle of the night lol

I live down the road from there.. And yes the area is generally safe. I have walked down that street at all sorts of hours of the night... And have never had anything to be worried about really.

Anything in the Firmdale group Firmdale Hotels

Slowly working my way through their range.....have stayed at The Soho Hotel and Covent Garden Hotel - wonderful, first class, superlative!

Thanks for the tips everyone, but I have decided to book The Langham on this trip :) Will take the others under advisement for the future!

Pullman London St Pancras was amazing when I stayed there in May. Really solid 4.5 star hotel - 5 minute walk to Kings Cross tube station - very recently refurbished rooms, excellent buffet breakfast and genuine service. Got the room for AUD$200 per night including breakfast. Well worth it, best hotel I have ever stayed in while in London.

I have only stayed at two in London. Park lane hotel which is a Starwood and at Grosvenor house which is a Marriott.
Both were fine. I only stayed at the park lane one night and only slept in the room, didn't use any facilities or dine.

Grosvenor was a 4 night stay on business with a large group of about 120. Excellent hotel across from Hyde Park.
