London to Copenhagen train

Coincidentally I did see a vidjo on YouTube published about 5 days ago about Hamburg to Copenhagen by train …

… and @robbegong’s link talks about how to get to there (or a few other alternatives in Europe).

The last two trips on the Eurostar - one from Paris and one from St Pancras have been an absolute zoo so if you can upgrade so you can get into the lounge. Security is worse than airports and there's not enough seats, toilet queues were enormous and food ordinary

Looking for insights for a London to Copenhagen by train please thanks

Over how many days are you looking to do this? As direct as possible, or more of a holiday by rail?

For the second half of the route (albeit in reverse order) , I recently posted a trip report for a train journey from Copenhagen right through to southern Germany and onto Zurich.

We stopped at Vejle, Hamburg, Berlin and Mannheim

Includes maps of all the rail sectors.

Seat 61 is great but he doesn't like Interail or Eurailpasses, the latter being the applicable one for most of us.

You can purchase point-to-point tickets in advance to save money, but these can be restrictive - tying you down to a particular route and especially a particular train time.

I prefer to buy a Eurailpass of which the 'consecutive' day ones are cheaper than an 'X days in Y' period. There are discounts via the Eurail(dot)com site for youth and seniors.

With planning on some lines you can avoid compulsory seat reservations but it's always important to be acquainted with the detail, as if you need to reserve, be aware that some trains can book out, especially over summer.

It just had a sale ending on 5 January 2023 giving 10 per cent off. (Useless information for you as of 6 Jan).

From Amsterdam you could do some pleasant excursions with a Eurailpass, avoiding trains like Thalys with extortionate supplements. It's a while since I've done it but Thalys IIRC had the highest supplement of any daytime train in Europe.

There is also a site called European Rail Timetable that sells printed and digital timetables, but more relevantly, various maps (and books of maps). If you don't need that, then the German Railway's site bahn(at)de is very good for planning (though not as good as a hardcopy up to date timetable). Select English up the top unless you have more knowledge of German than I do.

I recently did the Eurostar form St Pancras to Paris. Security was not worse than the airlines as claimed above: it was quick, but seating 'trainside' is indeed inadequate and there's only a couple of cafes so bring food purchased from a supermarket or other outlet through the security. You'll find lots of travellers have suitcases that get in the way and reduce the number of post-security seats available.

Boarding for Eurostar always seems to be just 15 minutes before, which is annoying as the front car(s) can be quite a walk along the platform. At Paris Gare du Nord, the platform is narrow but you'll cope.

With Eurailpass, some trains like Eurostar have quotas for passholders. Seat 61 takes you through all that.

Each to their own, plenty (aside from Seat61) regard Eurail and Interail as a complete ripoff, unless you are planning to spend more time on trains than actually spending time in European cities. Even for a train lover he (and I also) think you should actually stop occasionally.

Not saying there is no possibility of making Interrail/Eurail work but my experience I’d that unless you are trying to do 20 days in as many countries it’s probably not worth it, once upon a time it worked well but not for me.

Price-up your intended trip with & without a pass … if it works, it works.
Last time I used one was 20 years ago, it was worth it then, 1st class Eurail pass was cheaper than individual 2nd-class tickets for what we wanted to do … but I know the cost has gone up massively in that time.

Comparing to flying … was staying somewhere half an hour on the train from Stansted and the return flight to Brussels was about half the price of the slower-even-taking-customs-into-account Eurostar trip, 10 years ago.

I havent done the full London to Copenhagen but i did do Amsterdam-Brussels-Koln-Hamburg-Copenhagen in Oct. Its very comfortable by train but i would encourage you to stop a few times. Hamburg in particular had gorgeous architecture.

Seat 61 was my bible when planning and if you book far enough out you can get 1st class for the price 2nd class tickets. I loved arriving in the middle of cities instead of having to deal with airport transport in when you arrive.

Yes I pretty much agree and haven't used a Eurailpass for at least 15 years. I think they are a bit of a dated concept now, except as you say, where someone is just maxing out their train use.

It's so easy now buying tickets as you go using the official phone app of the Rail network (Eg: DB Navigator, SBB Mobile etc). You can choose exactly what ticket you need, often just a day or two in advance, and get your seat reservations. Conductor just scans the e-ticket on your phone screen. Easy.

🤣. I have a sneaky feeling she has more in common with common people than the other duchess
It's a sad situation, but very well-off people in Straya "don't do public transport" ... and she fits firmly into that category.
