Though for some like me public transport would take 2 hrs to go from house to work and 3 transfers instead of 30min by car
Imagine how much more convenient “not catching public transport” would be if you had a private car to get you there, rather than the pesky need to pay attention to the road yourself!

Each to their own, plenty (aside from Seat61) regard Eurail and Interail as a complete ripoff, unless you are planning to spend more time on trains than actually spending time in European cities. Even for a train lover he (and I also) think you should actually stop occasionally.

Also trains have changed. Maybe 20 years ago the passes would have been worth it.
But nowadays seat reservations are mandatory for many of the high speed trains even with a pass, that's like 10 euros extra for each journey.

And even some of the things like the Swiss Pass you need to catch a lot of expensive trains to cover it. I was on the Glacier express recently and the conductor spent a lot of time with one couple who I think bought a seat but not a ticket and they had to pay and she thought the Swiss pass covered the train

Not saying there is no possibility of making Interrail/Eurail work but my experience I’d that unless you are trying to do 20 days in as many countries it’s probably not worth it, once upon a time it worked well but not for me.

Yes I am not a Eurail fan at all either.

These days it is very easy to book online tickets in advance at great discounts. Sometimes you can use the trainline involved (saves commission), and sometimes you go through at engine as the trainline may not accept an Australian issued card.

Seat 61 is a great site. I believe that many years ago that I was one of the the first on this site to advocate it as a resource after discovering it as part of my then trip planning.
