Strategy to obtain US Amex

Chase cards worked there as well. The funny thing is my Australian cards never worked at giftcards.com.au. While the category was groceries at Chase, merchant type was miscellaneous general merchandise, not grocery stores and supermarkets like when using at Coles stores. Aeroplan card does not get 3x.
Just trying to get clear, does CSP get 3x supermarket spend category at giftcards.com.au - shows as "COLES GROUP LIMITED - H HAWTHORN EAST" on my Amex AU statement and I'm aware it does qualify as "supermarket" spend for AMEX Edge card in AU.

Last I tried, no. I'm fairly sure they're checking more than just what the merchant categorises themselves as.

I've had an update to my situation:
Chase:
  • My Chase CSP was approved on Saturday morning AEST. I took a punt and called them this morning after the banker at the branch called me.
Citi:
  • Have resent my ATM card but to AU as I told them I'm traveling to visit relatives and they will send it there.
Further update.
Chase:
  • I tried to make a start in my SUB spend with the card on ApplePay at Officeworks and it declined.
I called & the agent I spoke to said my account was under review and she can’t do anything further. Try with a different payment method and call back during the week.

Was this triggered by my purchase being in AU? How do I handle this situation?

Citi:
I’ve received my new debit card via DHL today (I’m impressed at how quickly it got to me and by DHL on Sunday). The new account is registered for online banking. Need to contact Citi on Monday US time to add my CC to the new online banking profile. Looking ok.

I would say it was triggered by the fact that it was on apple pay and you haven't activated your card yet.

Call back during the week and see what they need from you.

Not yet. Sounds like it’s an illusory benefit to have the card in ApplePay before you get the physical card to customers if those purchases are going to be blocked. Hope that’s all it is …

I mean considering it's on apple pay, being charged in a foreign currency/country and on a brand new account, and the card hasn't been activated, I can't fault Chase for being sensitive to it.
